Just wondering if there is a cheaper place to get a tap and die than some of these billiard suppliers, I can get 5/16 18 at home depot for $5 but a 5/16 14 seems to be about $35 thanks for any help

> The Travers and MSC catalogs have them under "special" thread taps, much cheaper than Atlas or Prather's. You are a bad man if you manage to come up with a die for this thread without having it made,I don't think they exist. Tommy D.

5/16X18 is a standard thread, 5/16X14 and most other commonly used threads in cue-making are what are known as Bastard Threads. These are made in much smaller numbers and are much more expensive because of this. 35.00 is very cheap compared to what you can expect to pay if you want to have one made. I don't know of anyone offering dies so if you want one of them expect to pay around 150.00

I just checked the MSC master catalog and dont see it

It is in the Travers catalog as Tommy-D suggested, both taper and bottoming, $11.72 each, part #14-020-141 and #14-020-143.

I was just curious about their selection, and it is quite impressive. I found them by drilling down through Cutting Tools > Taps > Hand Taps > High Speed Steel Special Taps.

I know they used to carry them as I have seen them in an old catalogue but about a year or so ago I looked at their on line catalogue and I couldn't find them. I was under the impression that they quit carrying them. As far as I know, they have never carried the corresponding die though.

I agree with the others, the price is very fair. I had a die made about 10 years ago from Widell. You won't like the price. :grin-square:

Nov 26, 2016. Just happened to see this thread from 2008. For anyone still looking for a 5/16 x 14 tap, I ordered a couple from https://drillsandcutters.com. Price is about $10 each plus shipping. They are not bottoming taps but I ground one down to make a bottoming tap out of it. Works fine in wood and plastic.

Dale,

I'm aware of the rule and technically you're correct. I'm going to ask that you give this one further consideration.
The wealth of info contained on that site with it's charts and calculators is invaluable.
One could spend a lot of time searching and scratching their head for the answers and they're all right there.
I learned something just by landing there; the tap/drill for 5/16x14 is not 1/4". Anyone curious yet ?
I'm all for helping CMs become smarter. That's how the craft evolves and gets better. Let's not hide good intel.
Rules like records are made to be broken but there has to be a very good reason. I think this one qualifies.

ask the cuemaker

This thread should be retitled teach the newby . 99 percent of the questions aren't asking the cuemaker, but are asking how to build cues. 26 years building cues, let's give everyone a head start so they don't have to pay their dues.even though I readdily disagree with tw he has some salient points.
Best wishes

Where to buy a tap is asking how to build a cue?

Really?

The guy who asked the question 9 years ago should be well on his way by now if he's stuck with it.

KJ you make a good point. They do have a lot of info and conversion charts and calculators etc that will be useful to a lot of people.

OK. Apologies folks. While I've been a member for several years I seldom spend time posting anything. I happened to find the thread for "5/16 x 14 tap" while searching for something else and didn't notice it was a subset under the cue makers forum. It took me a half hour tonight to figure out where to find the forum rules (told you I don't post much). In any case. I found sources for 5/16 x 14 taps and 5/16 x 14 dies when I was looking for them last year and making my own joint protectors. I'll not share any more information on this forum and, since I'm not a cue maker or interested in becoming one, it's not likely I'll visit it again. Cheers y'all.
