There are so many. I think Phil Capelle's how to play your best pool is an instant classic and probably the best place to start for most players.
 
For rock solid fundamentals order the videos "Play Better Pool" by Scott Lee & Randy Goettlicher.

great all-around intro book

great coverage of the mental side of the game

I find Phil's books to be very informative and easy to understand.

Plus, I'll add Jerry Brieseth's DVD for excellent basics for beginners and for intermediate players whose game has strayed of late.
