Last night I played in a tournament from 7:30 PM to 1:30 AM.
Being 63 years old I faded badly. Has anybody used 5 hour energy drink for pool or ? Does it work and were there any side effects? Also for those that have used it.Do you take it before you play or when you start to fade.

Not for pool but I take it sometimes when I photograph weddings. Which is much more tiring than playing a pool tournament.(10+ hours on my feet carrying 20-30 lbs of gear) It works great. I just wait till I feel a bit peaked and slam it down.

I try not to drink too much other caffeine beforehand though because I'm worried I might get shaky, although I never have.

I've taken it before a tournament and it does help, but for me at 64 it only last about 3 hrs. I have only taken one so I can't say if another would help me on the long running tournaments. I've been kind of leery of taking more than one because of my age. I don't get jittery or nervous so I might try two the next time about 5 hrs apart.

I am a little older than you. I found that P90X does wonders. Give it a try.

Just do your best and forget the rest!

I can't take it when I play pool, it makes me too jittery from all the caffeine. I wish they made one that doesn't have the caffeine, it is the equivalent to one or two cups of coffee.

I have used 5 hour energy drink once. I was pumped up, but it made me jittery. I'm sure it doesn't effect everyone like that, so if you are thinking about taking it. I would make sure to experiment taking some before you practice or something non important. I can't imagine that the jittery feeling along with a bit of nerves would be too good for your game. haha

I think its by far the best one on the market for pool. You don't seem to have that major crash from it. other energy drinks are just loaded with sugar so they only seem to last about an hour or so. and then you feel more tired then before.

I only take half of one and save the other half for the next time. It works great for me no jitters.

The caffeine in a 5 Hour is only equivalent to 1 cup of coffee. It is the B vitamins and amino acids that are really what make you alert. I have heard some players (top notch) swear by them and know one in particular that will not play without them. Others don't care for them. It is just like any other kind of performance enhancer in that you need to trust your gut in what you can handle. Really depends on physical shape and how healthy you are. A guy that works out and does cardio should have no problem taking two 5 hr energy shots in a 10 to 12 hour period.

I've only had one can before . . .

I take it before the match. It works great, but I find that I get jittery and need to pee.

Shook like a crack baby within a half an hour of drinking it . . . NEVER again.

Ginkgo-biloba tea

Just don't try drinking a bunch of them! We have a guy here in his early 20's and well over 400lbs. that drank 6 of them in a couple of hours. The poor kid was scared to death that he was going to die. His heart was racing about 100mph. We made him stay sitting and kept an eye on him in case he had a heart attack. He didn't, but I'm sure he came real close!

Good post, Neil.

Bruce, this is the problem with artificial/man-made stimulant drinks like these "5 hour" things. Nothing is free -- you will "pay" for that energy rush in some way/shape/fashion. Everyone's always looking for the "here and now quick-fix." The problem is, noone looks ahead. Either you'll crash (and I mean crash in a bad way, not just being sleepy), or else you suffer some sort of health complication.

Personally, I like to take a break, go outside, and run a lap or two around the block. Get that blood flowing. I also like to have a few bags of Ginkgo-biloba tea in my cue case. Just ask the waitress for a cup of hot water, slice of lemon, and your choice of sweetener (if you use any). The great thing about Ginkgo-biloba is that it's a natural concentration enhancer. It's subtle -- you won't "immediately notice" the difference after a few sips like you would with coffee, but as you go along drinking it, you'll find you can concentrate and stay focused better and longer. It won't prevent you from going home and having a good night's rest, either. (In fact, quite the contrary -- you'll have deep sleep with lively dreams.) If you're in a pool room where the chance of getting "jarred" is a possibility, make sure you keep your cup of Ginkgo-biloba tea covered.

I hope this is helpful!
-Sean

P.S.: almost any tea manufacturer carries a Ginkgo-biloba product. Celestial Seasonings (near you, Bruce!), Twinings, etc.
