Impossible for a human to break 50 mph. :embarrassed2:

Bustie, who's got one of the strongest breaks on record, was clocked at 35 mph at one event.

Jen:

I think the mighty Russian, Evgeny Stalev, was also clocked at that speed at an event several years ago. And he does it with his playing cue! I miss watching Evgeny; wish he'd come back to the pool scene... <sigh>

I know. I miss the little tike. He's so funny when he laughs, smiling that big grin of his. He does have a powerful break for sure.

The thing about those hard breaks is that you have little cueball control. Many times, in fact, the cueball jumps off the table.

I can see the Russian breaking now, with that little squeal of his, jumping up in the air, with his knee landing on the corner pocket. :grin-square:

Stalev's break is amazing but I think 50mph would be near impossible. I would be skeptical about any reading over 35mph and would question the radar gun used. I would imagine the entire break style would need to change in order to get any reading over 35. Unlike throwing a baseball, the arm doesn't snap, only the wrist. Stalev's break is as violent as they come. His wind-up brings the back of his cue as far back and high as he can go and then he just unleashes it. The fact he keeps the cueball at center-table most of the time is remarkable all by itself. If everyone broke that way, I would imagine the poolroom death toll would see an immediate jump.

As noted 50mph is impossible for a human, but a machine could do it. I'd love to hear what that sounds like. I've noted that the sound of a break changes as speed goes up. At 25 mph its a nice "crack" & rings. In the 30mph range it sounds like rumbling thunder & breaking glass.

You could probably achieve that speed or greater by rigging up a variation of one of those "hillbilly bazookas" and using the cue ball as the projectile. It would have to be short enough to lay flat on the table - and put something underneath it so you dont mess up the cloth!

Stalev is one of the greatest shot makers I have ever seen. I swear, the only way to beat him is to make sure he can't even see a sliver of a shot.

That's right -- it's a completely different sound, a real CRUSHING sound.

Even though Evgeny is backing-off on his break in this video (he breaks 9-ball slightly softer than he breaks 8-ball racks), you can still hear the distinct difference in Warren Kiamco's break (which is in the respectable 20's) and Evgeny's break:

(This link will jump you right to Evgeny's first break, which is 9:20 in the video.)

You can see that "clockspring" action in his right arm that Jude previously described. And keep in mind, he's backing-off his break in this video -- it's calm, cool, relaxed, like nothing to it. He really lets loose when he breaks 8-ball racks, with his right leg landing up on the corner pocket of the table as Jen mentioned!

if the balls got hit at 50mph they would break apart, there was a fellow from philly that came to my homeroom in baltimore,he was saying he had the hardest bar box break in the country and he had me watching him break,he hit them so hard and good that the cue hop up and stop dead center of the table everytime, and get this the cue ball actully had yellow spots on it,from the 1ball,and he had said that he had destroyed many 1balls when he broke!his first name was SAM and he was a big strong guy,he is around 40,if i can remember his last name i will tell it!

The yellow spots are more likely from felt burns than transference of surface material from the 1B.

A few years back at the BCA Nationals there was a booth set up with a radar gun clocking people breaking. It was open to amateurs and pro's and if I'm not mistaken Larry Nevel had the top break at 38mph.

Most likely Sam from Scranton, Budweiser cue and all.
