5a Qulted Maple

New seller on eBay offering 5a Quilted Big Leaf Maple at 1/2 of what would be considered a fair price. He has many listings. Looks like quality Quilt.
Probably not fully dry but would need to be cored anyway.

I just don't see this guy keeping his prices this low for long.

Its is an AUCTION ... what the price starts out a has nothing to do with what the final price is.
Perhaps it is low NOW ... but I doubt it will be sold for a low price.

Quilt happens in soft maple. Soft Maple trees on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state can grow to over 100' tall and have trucks over 8' in diameter. The first branches may be over 40' from the ground. The massive canapy can be almost as wide as the tree is tall. The combined weight of all this causes the quilt pattern. The tightest quilt is called "popcorn quilt".
The Maple trees also have burl that can be very tight with lots of eyes. I can get both quilted and burl.

I noticed a lot of curly from the soft Maple trees too. Is eastern hard Maple better for cues, or does it really matter?

The soft should be cored. Too light. But you can get figure in the soft that you can't get in hard and vice versa. Years ago I sold a lot of soft maple, most of it to a cue maker in FL. It takes stain nicely, the figure pops. I use it mostly for jump handles now, light and highly figured.

It is now over $80 plus 418 shipping.

I'll go along with that but I know many CMs that use it and I myself have used it several times. Big Leaf Quilt is a gorgeous wood and I also use quite a bit of Big Leaf Burl.

Now, of the 16 auctions that this seller had yesterday, 9 got won, 5 of those with only 1 bid & 7 auctions didn't receive even 1 bid. Click on his completed items and verify for yourself.

I need someone telling me that eBay is an auction site like I need breast cancer. But thanx for pointing that out.

I bought over $1,000 worth of wood last month and it all came from eBay.
My intent in posting this heads-up was an effort to share what I think might be a good source for those looking to buy some wood for their river.
I won't do it again.

I for one really appreciate it, as I'm one of the winners:D I will report back as to how it looks in person. Thanks KJ for the posting. In the future, if you don't want to post a possible deal here, you could pm me....;);) I won't mind, and I'll always say thank you.

Quilted maple and most other soft maples need to be impregnated with a hard acrylic resin, and then cored if it is going to be used for anything bigger than a window in the butt sleeve. Otherwise it just weakens and lightens the cue and deadens the hit.

Thanx Dave,
You made my day.
Sometimes you need to know that you're not just wasting your time.
Let me know when you're looking for something in particular and I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

i have bought wood from this guy before and you can get some deals from him but like you said not dry at all,but i think even 4A would be a stretch on that board and there is no way it is 5A.i would say it's a 3A board at best.

Just got my board today, not too bad shipping time. I opened the wrapping and was a little disapointed in the figure on the side he didn't show a pic of. Overall, it's not bad, but I will ask for more pics next time before I place a bid.The board is useable but wouldn't consider it 5a, more of a 3a-4a on one side, 2a-3a on the other. It may get better once I cut it and turn it, but it's currently at 20% moisture so it will be awhile.....
I also think his shipping cost is a little high, he could use UPS for cheaper IMO.
Dave

at 2 and 1/4" you will be able to cut quite a bit off the bad side.maybe it will look better.expect to pay big money for the 4A and 5A stuff.

When people use the term "low price" on an auction it just makes no sense.
Only the final bid determines whether or not it was sold for a "low price".
Another word that gets me is "HURRY"

Sorry if I offended you ... I did not intend to.

Theres a guy from Nova Scotia who sells a bit of geetar wood, gun and knife scales, but once in awhile you can snag a couple of nice pieces of 1.5 curly from him. I got 3 18" pieces from him a few weeks ago for $15.
