Why don't we rack 9-ball in order?
was there a specific reason, I know it use to be rack that way, then it changed?
 
To my knowledge, 9 ball was never racked in any specific order other than 1 in front, 9 in the middle. The idea is for the game to be unpredictable...there is actually something in the rules about racking in no specific order...
 
9 ball has never been racked in any order, other than the 1 in front and the 9 in the middle. And, it's only recently that the "random" order has been enforced. I rack the balls like Joe Tucker recommends in his book "Racking Secrets" and have been since I first read it.
 
There is a best way to place the balls to prevent a runout.

I was surprised when a 2 in my 9-Ball league put that rack on me. I asked her where she learned it, and she said "I read the book."
 
to rack for yourself use this: The 4 will go up table leaving 1234 at one end and 56789 at the other end making the runout easier

To rack for someone else use this: 1358 go up table. 24679 down table. This rack requires much more cue ball travel in order to run the rack. Thus increases the chance of a mistake.

I think that's how they go. Feel free to chime in if this isn't correct.
 
The rack on a Swift case is also known to be a difficult run.

I picture someone after reading this thread going into a bar or poolroom and racking 9-ball in a money game with his/her notes from this thread. I don't see it going over too big with the other players either:wink :D . Johnnyt
 
While racking with the breaker on your left looking down table....

Reverse it if the breaker is on the rackers right side. ;)
