Is it legal for me to call safe and then drive the lowest numbered ball into a pocket.

If this is not legal what happens after the scenario happens?

There is no called safe in 9 ball, you hit lowest ball and make a ball, you shoot again. Only game I know that you can call a safe and pocket a ball is in 8 ball.
 
I may be just an un-learned man - but as far as I know - there is no requirement to call anything in texas express 9-ball. (call pocket or call safety etc.)

With this logic how would my opponent know that I am playing safe when making a ball if I don't call safety prior to shooting the ball in the pocket.
 
If you hit the lowest numbered ball on the table first and make that ball or another ball - its ur turn to shoot again. (or u win the game if the 9 goes down)

Perhaps I should have clarified that further - there is no requirement to call anything in texas express 9-ball (call pocket or call safety etc.) because call pocket & call safe are not an option / not in the rulebook in 9-ball.

You can do this 14.1 as well. only difference is the ball gets spotted before your opponent takes his shot. ( of course in 8 ball it stays down)

You can call safe until your face is blue but as soon as you make a legal shot and a ball drops you must continue shooting.

He wouldn't care since it would still be your shot.

Think about it. What if you had an easy one ball and no possibility of shape on the two. Would it be fair to be able to sink the one ball effortlessly and pass the two ball to your opponent?

This question has me doubting my rules knowledge.

Isn't the real key whether or not the format is "Texas express" vs. "call pocket/call safe"? Aren't these two formats mutually exclusive? Can you even possibly call a safety in Texas express?

If the rules state it is "call safe", and you declare you are playing a safety, aren't you giving up the table after your shot regardless of what happens?

Kevin Lindstrom, 9ball rules are very simple, you can actually slob balls in pockets as long as you make a legal shot which is hitting the lowest numbered ball, so therefore with this in mind, if you shoot the lowest numbered ball into a pocket, you must shoot again weather you like it or not, as long as the shot is legal, and something was made, then you shoot again.

there is no called shot in 9-ball. if you make a legal hit and pocket an object ball, you keep shooting.
 
If it's just you and your buddies, you can play any rules you want. But outside of your basement there's no such thing as call-shot/call-safe 9-ball.

(When me and my buddies play 8-ball we play traditional 8-ball rules except that you have to pocket one of your group with a bank shot. If not, you have to bank the 8.)

Lets say for the sake of argument that you are playing call pocket 9ball. If that were the case and you sink a ball on a safety shot your opponent gets the option to take the table or give it back. At least that is how it works in 10ball (where call pocket is the norm).....

Even in call safe you cannot pocket a ball and make the other guy shoot. If you call a safe and make a ball my accident, the other player can make you shoot again.

He'll know when he can't see the ball LOL.

Why does it matter outside of league in 9 ball? If it was a called shot and called safe game like the "real" 10 ball rules or 8 ball or straight pool, then it would matter.

Only time safes matter in 9 ball that you call them is in league for handicap scoring. And even then if you make the ball you keep shooting.

What version of 8 Ball allows the shooter to pocket a ball on a called safety?

Before you guys get into an 8-ball argument, in Texas Express 9-ball, if you pocket the lowest numbered ball while shooting, you must shoot again.
