For as relatively simple as True Grit as a whole was, John Waynes acting was quite powerful and pulled that movie together. That freaking donkey singer they put in there I never thought could act to save his life, he was an over actor. The girl I honestly dont remember her name, she played a pretty good part too.

You NEVER bet against the Duke !! He was still rated as the most popular actor 20 years after his death. That is pretty strong to fade. The "alive" actors had to be a little pissed about it.

IT was a shock he won on more than acting ability. Hoffman is a liberal, and Wayne is a conservative. And Hollywod hates conservatives and it was surprising the Oscar folks voted for Wayne....... Many conservative actors don't go out of their way to show their true colors as it could come back to haunt them in casting.

Not my opinion, but Hollywood admits to this little nugget and how they have targeted certain conservatives from movies and TV shows. Kinda wild when you think the liberals are suppose to have the "heart" and do the "right" thing !

Anyone remember when Tom Selleck was ambused by Rosie O'Donnell on her show because Tom was in support of gun rights. But of course Rosie "forgot" she was a paid spokesperson for a dept store that sold guns !!!

I said it once in this same post and i will say it again...That guy did nothing great...lets say he got 800 total kills in 100 days...thats 8 soldiers per day...ANYBODY who knows how to use a gun who has no problem killing someone can do that if they are given the targets of opportunity. Just because he got a lot of kills doesnt mean he was a great sniper...it just means the red army was retarded for still sending soldiers to his area when they knew there was a sniper there...thats one of the worst tactical things you could possibly do!

Secretariat was a freak of nature. He had a ridiculously huge healthy heart which simply made him able to run at peak speed longer than any other horse could run at peak speed. Apparently not genetic, as far as I know none of the horses off of his line had the same attribute. With the breeding but not the heart he produced some stake horses and some pretty nice stuff two generations down but never another true super horse that I have noticed. I quit keeping up with horses long ago.

Speaking of in the barn, Affirmed beat Alydar into second place in all three triple crown races but never equalled him in the barn. I have always wondered why. Wondered how long the odds are for there to be a horse so superior to the rest of the field as Alydar was and there to be be a horse clearly superior to him too. Almost any other year Alydar wins the triple crown.

Horses were fun but the last one I bought cost me over a quarter million, that is how I met my exwife! :embarrassed2:

Someone already mentioned chess, but they went with Kasparov instead of Fischer.

I agree with you, though. Kasparov had a longer career and a better record than Fischer, but I think that was strictly because of Fischer's political and personal weirdness. If memory serves me, Spassky and Petrosian held their own with Kasparov, and Fischer beat them both pretty badly.

Unfortunately, we'll never know, but I don't think chess was or will ever be more interesting than the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match in Reykjavik.

I think any other year Sham wins the Triple Crown too. Secretariat was the first horse to run the Derby in under two minutes, Sham was the second.

Speaking of Alydar, I had the misfortune of rooting for him against Affirmed in all three Triple Crown races. It was a tremendous Belmont that Affirmed won though.

Someone should have paid more for what ultimately happened to Alydar, but that is another story.

The difference between Fischer and Kasparov is that Kasparov had the entire Soviet chess empire to back him and help him become world champion, while Fischer taught himself and became the most dominant player ever virtually by himself.

Larry Bird, he was the best ever: the greatest, most creative passer ever; one of the greatest defensive rebounders, the greatest all around shooter, the greatest clutch shooter (unfreaking unbelievable), and played great team defense. Add to all these qualities his great basketball intelligence, mental toughness, and pure skill, and you have, by far, the greatest player of all times!

Overall Bird was a better player than jordan Brd had more rebounds assists and bird was a much better shooter than mj people only think jordan is great because of his dunks and nike

Larry was a great shooter with few dunks unlike Jordan who had many dunks to increase his shooting percentage. Larry was also a better rebounder, free throw shooter, and passer than Jordan. Larry entered the NBA one year late, after sitting out a year in college, and missed almost another full year in his prime with a foot injury. He was not a selfish shooter but just wanted to win and would get all of his teammate involved. He averaged over 10 rebounds per game for his career - not bad for someone who couldn't jump! He was both the first AND second player ever to shoot over 50% from the field AND over 90% from the line for a season - and this from a long range shooter! He was the best ever with a ful command of the game and awareness of what was happening - always.

An army on the offensive will always present more targets for those in a defensive position , especially snipers - but to say ANYBODY who knows how to use a gun and has no problem killing can accomplish this is simply not true - he had to conceal himslef in adverse conditions sub zero weather - no telescopic sights etc - true the Russians underestimated the Finnish resestance (BTW - the Russian casualties in the Winter War caused Hitler to underestimate Russian resistance later ) but the Russians
used counter snipers and even artillery to try and ferret him out - they eventually stopped him.
