A Few Uses for Spare Simonis!

I picked up a 6x6-inch square of some Simonis 860HR when the tables at our hall were being reclothed. I just kept it in my case as something cool to have, maybe I could use it as a break/jump patch if I wanted to practice. Over time, I figured out a few new ways of using the cloth to my advantage!

1) Shaft burnisher

If I can't find a brown paper towel to use (don't like using dollars, too small), I bust out the Simonis and give my shaft a good few times over until I feel the heat. Does the trick quite nicely I'd say! A good substitute if you're ever in a pinch!

2) On-the-spot hand cleaner

Over a longer session, my hand will get dirty with chalk and dirt from the cloth, a not-so-pleasant sight. One time during a tournament, my hands were getting grungy to the point of sticking to my shaft, but I had already used my 5-minute match break to clean my shafts (humid day). I reached into my case and pulled out the good ol' Simonis. I rubbed the chalk, and a good bit of moisture I might add, off of my hands with firm pressure, and my bridge felt like cueing in the crack of a baby's backside :p

3) Bridge cover

There are these metal, crown-type bridge heads all over the place these days, the ones with two large holes in the body of them. Personally, I don't like using them because if I have to use a bridge and strike the cue ball with draw, sometimes my shaft will bounce off the table and smack back down on the bridge head, leaving a little nick or dent. Again, in a pinch, brilliance strikes! I take the Simonis square and press the bottom two corners through the front holes of the bridge head. I let the rest drape over the grooves, and in seconds my shaft is protected from dings and dents!

Anyone else have any novelty/practical uses for extra cloth?

Hi,
I know they turn it over and use it for card tables.
I knew a pool hustler named Miami, a great one handed player who traveled all over selling Aprons that you wear to keep your clothes clean from chalkdust. His wife made them out of tablecloth leftover from his pooltables.

> I've had a 6" x 6" piece in my case for over 10 years that I use for shots where I have to bridge off a rubber pocket liner,or for having to bridge a shot up against the metal corner castings, usually both of these are on bar tables.

It saves my shaft from dents, dings, and rubber streaks, plus you can stroke the shot with confidence, knowing your shaft will NOT hang up during the stroke. It's made me money and won me tournaments. Tommy D.

I use to make and sell shoe shine kits door to door as a kid. I put two strips of pool cloth in the kits also. Can't beat it for buffing shoes. Johnnyt

you can take a small piece of cloth and use it for a cue holder with a little imagination

Years ago when Gary and I were on the road, we stopped in a small poolroom on the outskirts of Columbus Ohio. The owner was a thrifty soul. He would use Simonis back in the 80's, but to defray the cost, he'd use it til it was about ready to change and flip it over and use the other side. Funny thing was someone told him about beeswax for sealing the slate seams. He'd been using plaster. He decided a candle was the same thing and used a red candle to do the seams. Only thing was when he flipped the cloth over the pink lines he'd had on the top of his cloth before, turned bright red.

I took a little larger piece, maybe 9 inches by 2 ft, and used it to get signatures on. Ive always meant to get it framed to hang on my wall but never got around to it.

And I thought I was into everything pool....truck is turning pool into everything lol.

I use about a half a pool hall worth of old Simonis to cover my machine tools for the winter (with low-wattage light bulbs in the machine base to keep them above ambient coldness). It takes 3 9'ers to cover my milling machine, 2 for the lathe, and 1 each for the shaper and power saw. I just uncovered the shop for the summer (OK, I know, summer here is a couple of months away but I like to get an early start).

I use it to line the bottom of those plastic cases that are normally used for displaying signed baseballs.
