"A guy that calls himself "Colorado Charlie, a former pro player"?

So, I was at at the APA thing, in Vegas, last week. I was waiting in the mini mania line, to sign up for an event. It's a long line (even longer than the line for the bathroom) and some folks tend to chat a lil, to pass the time.

So, there is this older (60-ish) guy that seems to be one of the more talkative ones in line. In fact, he wouldn't shut up, and had stories galore. he's about 5'10", short gray hair, clean shaven, wears a baseball cap and has some kind of issue with one of his legs/hip which doesnt allow him to stand for long periods of time. He might be from CO or FL?

He started out 1-2 spots behind me, in line, and starts talking to everyone in front of him, while inching forward a few spots. By this time, he is now in front of me and smooth talking to the 4 guys in that group. At that point, he has his girlfriend hold his new spot for him, while he sits down for a while. When he come back, I ask him if he is in line and that the end of the line is "back there". He talks his way around it and says that he has been in line for quite some time and turns to the guys behind me to verify that. They nod and I drop the issue cuz i dont feel like arguing it.

So, to appease me for cutting in line, "Colorado Charlie" starts talking AT me. He tells me tall story after tall story. Mainly, be was boasting aobut how he used to play "pro" and started name dropping top players that "he beat". Finally, after telling me about his gambling conquests, i had to ask him if he would like to play me some. Now, I'm not a world beater by a long shot, but i just had to try this guy some, to satisfy my curiousity. First, CC tries to move me to play on a 9 foot table, which was fine by me. Then, he asks what i want to play, which i turned it back to him with "I'll play what you want to play". Then comes the "I dont play for low stakes" line. Keep in mind that we were signing up for the $20, 8 man, SL 6&7, 8 ball mini :p. Anywho, long story, short...I played the event, the next day, made it to the finals and chopped with the other guy. Oh, the other guy i chopped with WASN'T "Colorado Charlie", the world beater.

So, anyone know him?

I've played APA in Colorado for quite a while and I've never heard of him.
In fact, I've never seen a Colorado APA player woof anyone, ever.
He was probably drunk.
I remember one night in a small bar on South Broadway in Denver, convincing a bunch of drunks
that I was a famous pool hustler named "Broadway Joe".
My name isn't even Joe, but the bartender confirmed it was true...:smile:

there is a well known Charlie from Co. Spgs that fits that age and height description but he is a bar table player unless he's playing in local the golf game. One of the best ever bar box players i might add. He isn't the bragging type tho.

I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about. Bar box player, but not sure he plays much anymore. No idea if he plays/played as well as in his stories! :p
 
Isn't it funny how the guys that talk the most smack about gambling will do ANYTHING to get out of actually playing for money.

Also, guys, I asked him what his name was but I forgot his last name. I *think* it was something that started with a "B", like Berkerey, Berkely, or Berringer?

When I was stationed close here back in the mid 90's there was a guy named charlie shootman, or workman..something like that. He could easily fit that description
 
Charlie has been a friend of mine for more than 20 years. He does live in CO (but in Boulder, not C. Spgs), and is a pretty big-time coin dealer (he works for one of the big numismatic firms. Colorado Charlie is a nickname that he's had for a long long time, even when he lived in NY. Charlie was an APA league operator in NYC at the same time I was an LO in MT (early 90's). He was never a pro player, but a decent player. The last time I saw Charlie was about 6 years ago at the SBE.

When ever I make a nice bank, I always tell my opponent that my old nick name used to be the Side Pocket Rocket.

But, butting into a long line can get you escorted to the back under certain circumstances.

I had to reprimand an old blue hair at the bank one day. Snotty old thing she was. Trying to feign Alzheimers doesn't cut it with the Rocket.

I think you nailed it. Charlie did make mention of the NJ /NYC area and some od the local rooms. I'm pretty sure this is the guy. What was his last name?

He still lives there, plays in the golf game every day. Monster bar box player, i've known him for 30yrs

Where does he play? Cause I haven't seen any "monster" players come out of Boulder or Longmont in quite some time and I think the one time I did see a great player there he was just passing through, and I go up there now and then to try and get a money game.
 
I have some information that the guy lives in Boulder, and according to my sources he is a real idiot, a legend in his own mind.
I don't want to post his last name, but I doubt anybody here knows him.

I'm not talking about the guy Colorado Charlie from Boulder Scott Lee and the originator of the thread refered to. Don't know him. I was talking about Charlie Shootman in the other guys post i quoted. Charlie is from Colorado Springs. Still lives there. I used to live there 15 years ago. In the early 80's he finished 2nd two years in a row in the BCA masters singles and the team he was on also won the team event 1 or 2 years. That was THE event back then. I can't remember now who beat him in the singles, but it was the same guy both years. The BCA team he was on then was the Bank Shot, Scott Smiths old bar. A who's who on that team He was also partners with Grady when he owned his room in the springs. He was also on my 7's 9-ball team in APA or Bush league, Can't remember what it was back then in 95 or 96. And believe me, he was a monster on a bar box. There are other peeps on here who know him, but he never really ran the road a bunch or played in a lot big tournaments.. Hes probably around 65 now, you ought to go down there and offer him a little spot. He might still play.... When Meachum was visiting me here in Ky. a few months back i think he told me charlie was playing in the golf game out of Antiques

I'm usually at Antiques on Friday nights. He probably plays in the daytime when I'm at work. I really want to learn to play straight pool better and just how to play golf

Some of those guys have been playing in that same golf game for 30 years, Like my old running buddy Tony Cisneros. Iplayed in it when it was at Jimmy Gravels old place before i moved... Don't know if you know any of those guys

Lol, I think I'll pass on the spot, if I am ever down there I wouldn't mind playing him win or lose I love playing the old timers and the top guys. Thanks for the correction on which guy you were talking about, I can believe he is a great player or possibly a monster if he was from the springs, lots of talent down there.

I know him! He used to live on Long Island.He has a huge mouth. He is a B player. Played him for 50 one time and it took me 2 weeks to get paid!
 
I'm pretty sure he's the same guy Scott mentioned. Into coins and stuff. Like I said though, I've never seen him play.
