A Letter from Mike Dechaine

I might be the only one, but I feel the Mosconi cup was ruined when a player can not earn a place on the team by his playing. One captain's pick I can understand, but when the entire team is picked at the whim of one person I'd rather watch something more interesting.

You're not the only one, its a travesty when the second best rotation player in the USA is not on it. It just isn't right.

It's. far from a travesty ,, you guys act like he can't be beat when that's far from the case
Every member on that team is capable of beating him ,,

We had a team of the best Rotation players in the wold last time and still lost ,MD lost one of the final matches last time he was there ,,
He got double dipped not to long ago in his home room buy a guy who could sniff a chance at the MC ,,,

He's mopping up regional turny's and you guys act like he's god , get a grip he's not
and there certainly is not much of a drop off to the next man up
It's a to do about nothing

Hey folks, let's stop talking about him being only 26.....

Today is his birthday. He's 27 :p

Happy Birthday Mike!

Mark Wilson may have done this young man a huge favor. It seems as if he has taken this rejection to heart and examined the reasons why he wasn't honored with being selected.

Sometimes our greatest disappointments turn into our best assets. How many times have we heard a story of rejection spurring an individual to reach even deeper within themselves to reach greatness?

I certainly hope that's the case here. Good luck.

You are really ignorant. Does he owe you money? Slept with your sister?
When he lost to Joey Dupuis he ran into a freight train. Joey couldn't lose they way he was running out.

Have you see that Earl can't beat Mike anymore? He's at a whole other level.

There's a Joss tour at Snookers this weekend, stacked with talent. You wanna bet Mike doesn't win? Please say yes...how about something casual 500?

Classy post Mike.

We don't know each other, not that I am someone to know, but I have heard that you also take losing real hard after the fact, almost becoming reclusive in your hotel room for a day or more if you do lose. Since you are trying to work on things, I hope I can suggest you work on having a short memory. The great ones in basketball learn how to forget about the game winning shot they missed, in baseball they forget about striking out with the game on the line or blowing a save in the ninth inning, in football they forget about the field goal they missed or interception they threw.

This is what makes them not only great players but great teammates. Something that can only lead to succcess, especially in a team event that is played over several days such as the Mosconi Cup.

I hope you have not only taken the time here to publicly state your intentions but also take the time to reach out to Mark Wilson to learn what it will take to get in on the selection past the initial analysis of all potential players next year. Also take the time to reach out to the current members of the USA Mosconi Cup and give them your support.

Solid post watchez...I try to do this when I play poker whenever someone puts a bad beat on me. I can't let the current bad beat effect my future play or else I will be dumping money.

I think Mike would agree that it may benefit him a little more then just that.

By not selecting him for the team Mike likely now feels he has something to prove to Mark Wilson and the MC team. He will be playing with an added fire to prove the wrong choice was made and probably have the best year of his career to date.

Best thing he could do is win a World Championships this year and then have the announcers mention him every 5 minutes during the Mosconi Cup broadcast.

I have to think the timing of this post was not entirely random, he "just" snapped off a pretty huge win and it probably felt like a pretty good moment to say something.

All this drama is unnecessary. The MC Captain is saying a whole lot more about himself and his coaching acumen than he is about MD. And NO! He is not doing MD any favors.

MD’s resume could be ignored if there were medical, mental, character, or criminal issues. There are none. He is young, dedicated, and without question, plays at the very top. He is winning nearly every event he enters. His record cannot be ignored.

That being said, the Captain blew it. He had a chance to leave his mark and influence on a young player in a positive way. A Captain (Coach) shows his medal by unifying a group of diverse athletes and bringing out the best in them. I would expect that an effective captain or coach would have a candid discussion with each individual athlete and with the team as a whole, about what is expected of them. Does anyone really think that MD is not manageable?

I am sure of this: Exclusion and isolation is destructive. It is humiliating and hurtful. The MC Captain did damage.

First off, great post Mike Dechaine. I hope this paves the way for many future opportunities for you - not just the MC.

I hate that you are being so contemptuous of Mark Wilson. Had you not, I would not feel the need to point to Mike's record. Since you bring it up, please look at Mike's record in this event.

2012: 0-2 in singles, 1-2 in doubles, 1-0 in Team match, 2-4 total

2011: 1-1 in singles, 0-2 in doubles, 0-1 in Team match, 1-4 total

Two-year total: 1-3 in singles, 1-4 in doubles, 1-1 in Team match, 3-8 total
Or, if you count half a point for each player in a doubles win or loss, and one-fifth of a point for each player in the team match, his record is as follows:
2012: 0.7 - 3.0
2011: 1.0 - 2.2
Total: 1.7 - 5.2

Over two years 27%. THIS IS HIS RECORD.

Mike -

Too many times in the past I have responded too early, only to regret what I said or did in the heat of the moment.

Allowing time to pass before you make a statement allows the "sting" to subside. And it appears you have taken the high road. It also can be said that honest people get on others nerves because they speak the truth, and some people don't like hearing the truth.

Nice win last weekend. I watched the tournament most of the weekend. You played very well.

Be true to yourself, and live the life the way you want to live it.

iba7467, I could agree with you if MD was 40 or 50 years old and had been playing for 30 years. He is a young and improving player with a very strong recent record.
