A plea to CSI regarding SVB vs Ko

Guys let's give the man a break. All I have to say is....hey I want to see race to 50. I don't have to deal with the logistics etc. Ko may not want to play to 50. Ditto for Shane. They are there to win a tournament. I have seen Shane after a TAR match and he looks like he went 10 rounds with a Gorilla. It's physically and mentally draining.

Let's give Ozzy a pass.

Race to 21 it is then.

Personally I thought the Biado/Hatch race to 25 was long enough and certainly exciting enough, but Shane does tend to move things along so I would be in favor of a longer race myself.

For those curious about the match, here's a link:

http://www.playcsipool.com/portals/0/PressReleases/PR140404.pdf

Justin was hired by CSI so I assume he'll be involved in the broadcast, which will be PPV on CSI's stream.

Here's from the press:

CueSports International, Henderson, Nevada (April 4, 2014) – CSI is proud to present the Kamui Challenge Match: Shave Van Boening vs. Ko, Pin-Yi. This much anticipated match will take place July 17, 2014 during the BCAPL & USAPL National Championships at the beautiful Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Those in participating in the BCAPL or USAPL National Championships can watch for free in person or via direct live stream feed in their hotel room. Those not in attendance can watch via pay-per-view at http://www.playcsipool.com/LiveStreaming.aspx.

Since 2011, Van Boening has been the top performing player in the USA and arguably the world. Although all of his accomplishments are too numerous to list, some of the most noteworthy include the 2008 World Cup of Pool Champion, 2011 US Open 10-Ball Champion, 2011 & 2012 Derby City Classic Master of the Table, 2012 US Open One-Pocket Champion, 2007/2012-2013 US Open 9-Ball Champion, 2013 US Open 8-Ball Champion, and the 2012 & 2014 US Bar Table Championships All-Around Champion. He has also been featured on numerous challenge matches with an incredible record.

Ko, a Taiwan superstar and relatively unknown in the U.S., also possesses an impressive list of accomplishments. He was the 2011 Guinness World Series of Pool Champion, 2011 & 2013 All Japan Men’s Champion, and 2013 Indonesia 9-Ball Open Champion. He also finished 2nd in the 2009 Qatar International Open, 3rd in the 2010, 2011 & 2013 World Cup of Pool, 5th in the 2013 US Open 10-Ball, and 5th in the 2013 US Open 8-Ball.

Here's one more opinion: Ko needs weight.

He's the Spokesman!!?????? OMG I thought he was a loose cannon employee.

Mark- Cut your losses

It happens.

I remember being the new spokesmodel on the USAF desk at the Pentagon, when the Air Force Times called up looking for a comment about something said about a new piece of AF equipment during a hearing on The Hill. So I'm listening to the reporter and finally I give my "official Air Force response."

The next day the newspaper comes out and there is Captain Lou Figueroa's one word response: "Baloney" quoted in the story. Shortly thereafter, the colonel in charge of my section picks up the phone, puts the call on hold, turns to me and dryly says, "Lou, Congressman Dingell's office is on the line." :-o

Like I said, it happens, even to the best of us.

A Race to 21 is a great match imo. Especially playing Ten Ball. I also like two out of three sets, each a Race to 11. I think there are time considerations here, with several other events going on at the same time. A Race to 50 must be played over two days, not so going to 21. I'm with Ozzy on this one. Thanks for putting together a dream match with two of the best on the planet. We are probably looking at 3-4 hours of great pool! :thumbup2:

P.S. Got confirmation that Dennis is coming. He will be playing a challenge match also. Maybe with Chang the other great player from Taiwan.

Shane and Nick just played a race to 50 in something like 4 hours or so with NO clock. Use a clock and it can be done in one day easy. JT

I think we'd all be happier with whatever longer race we could possibly get up to 50 which i doubt is in the cards now. 40 would be ok as far as im concerned. I could live with 35 also. 100 Im not interested as a spectator.

35 is almost enough to make the match long enough that both players will have enough time to show their stuff. That extra 14 games to the finish line is huge, it is an extra 66% more games to the finish line then the original race to 21. If someone gets a hot start and gets to 21-13 then the guy at 13 still has a good chance to put something together from there to mitigate their own slower start and get to the finish line. 50 is still way better and is about the length of race players of this calibre need to ensure both players get a chance to stretch their legs and overpower the other guy in anything other then a fast start.

But what do we know, we are only the fans of the sport that watch these things. Ozzy is clearly targeting the millions of people that don't watch pool and could not care less about it as the target audience. I am sure that those people will log onto the stream in droves...

We already know what would happen in a race to 50. Shane would horsef#$$ him just like he has everyone else. That being said, I too would prefer a race to 50 or 100 because it would silence everyone that still thinks anyone in the world has a chance at beating him.

No. Not with this kid. Ko Pin Yi is the Asian Shane Van Boeing. He can do packages, he has the big break, he has all the composure under fire.

The kid put a ten pack on Orcullo with Dennis on the hill. This isn't someone who get's devastated in long races.

What I find funny is that how the perception has shifted to the point where us fans consider 21 to be a short race. I can remember that back in the day no one ever heard of players going to 21. 15 was a long race.

Although I do like the race to 50 - finish it in one day. I would like to see this be the race against Ko, better for both of them IMO.

Agree about Ko.

I'm still rooting for Shane, and do believe him to be the favorite. But whether the race is 21 or 50, I don't see this being the same ass whooping we all just recently witnessed.

I can't say if Ko is on Shane's level (it doesn't really seem like anybody is), but I do know he's way above Nick's level.

There is no race length that will be enough to determine who the better player is, but, at least for my money, Shane, Darren, and Dennis have separated themselves from the pack and no matter the result, I'll still view those three as the best. Between them, they win most of the titles in rotation pool events.

If Ko Pin Yi, however, wins the 10-ball event at the Rio in what is sizing up as one of the toughest fields in the history of our sport, he'll have knocked off a multitude of champions, and nothing less than that will get me to count Ko with the other three.

For an exhibition, race to 21 is enough, arguably more than enough.

One of the rare times we don't agree. Longer races allow the rolls to shake out, they allow the mistakes to even out and the one who emerges is the one who brought a better overall game to the table over distance.

Marathon runners never say oh well the longer race doesn't show who the best was - they instead bow down to the guy who crosses the finish line first after putting in 26 miles because they all know what it takes to stay with it for that distance.

I like epic matches.

kind of funny

So, the race is to 21 to spare Ko the embarrassment of having to play Shane a long set?

Very diplomatic... put Shane on a leash in order to avoid an international incident.

I am as big a fan of Shane as anyone. He comes to Fargo, plays his good friend Rory, we go to supper or breakfast. I think he is one of the best. Now everyone is sitting here thinking he is going to run right over KO. The question is how many time have you even watched KO play? Probably not much.

Shane is playing like a beast right now, but I remember sitting with him at 4 Bear in New Town last year and we were watching Lu Hui Chan, and Shane said he couldn't beat him at 9 ball. Not hearsay, I was standing right there. In fact the Chan beat him for 2nd and third in that 8 ball tourney, Shane didn't say much about it at supper as we talked about a money match he had set up during the US Open One Pocket. Is KO better than Chan? Yes I know this is 10 ball and not 9 ball.

Will he win, I think he can, especially if he plays like he did against Nick the Greek. Can KO win, of course, but for all the matches I have watched on streams the last few years, I can't say I have seen him all that much, but when I have he is good.

I think we've all gotten spoiled with the longer races. COM was 120, now we want matches to go to 50?!

21 is good.

This match is our time's COM. It deserves a better # than 21.

Not that it is on the table, but still....

If Ko gets to the hill first, Shane may ask him to back it and jack it!!

I too would like to see a bit longer race. Think 50 may be too long since they will be playing on a table that doesn't have 5 inch pockets but either way..I look forward to it!!

hmmmm, no.

COM was for like $100K, in Hong Kong, with lots of beautiful people hanging around.

This is more like the Slight Hue of Money :)
