Good evening, everyone.

Known as kicks over here in England, why do folks suffer fewer bad contacts in pool than their snooker-playing counterparts? Is it merely because the balls are larger and heavier, or should other factors be considered?

I woul think that'a yes.
The slower cloth must also contribute too.
I have never seen it happen in 3c billiards.

One would have thought so, sir, but the napped baize on English Billiard tables has become much thinner (and hence faster) in recent years and the problem of kicks has significantly increased as a result.

It would seem, therefore, as far as snooker is concerned the faster the cloth, the more bad contacts one is likely to encounter.
 
I believe the advent of thinner baize on snooker tables has significantly increased the cueball's tendency to bounce before it collides with the colour which, along with chalk dust, is a definite cause of many a bad contact.

Cling/skid/kick does not depend on cloth condition, ball size, or static electricity.

The only times I have experienced kicks is on new cloth.

Pro snooker tournaments have cloth and cushions changed frequently.
They are always playing on new cloth.

At the current world championship, one table is fine, the other has been seriously squirrely.

Smaller table, larger balls.
 
New cloth absolutely increases the frequency of skids. Base of the object ball breaks traction with the cloth = skid.
 
My theory is chalk on either the cue ball or object ball - or both - is the culprit.

That's why I keep a sheet of paper towel in a couple pockets on the table. At the end of each rack in 14.1 I clean whatever balls have fallen into those pockets along with the cue ball. It only takes a few seconds and keeps the chalk off the balls.

Even at 3C it can happen a lot. I think I heard Blomdahl say one time that at one particular Crystal Kelly tournament there was never a good contact.

I refereed at the 1980 World Tournament (14.1) and I saw a lot of very remarkable skids/kicks/bad contacts. I don't know how the conditions were different there.

Cloth/ball friction at the instant of contact is not large enough to change the direction of the object ball. It is the ball/ball friction that is important.
