A word to the wise guys

similar mistake

To all the guys who responded to my rant, I did not intend to come across
that I was smart and anyone younger than me was stupid. I admit I was
a little crass in my wording. Anyone who cannot learn from their mistakes
is destined to be terminally stupid. Thanks for all the input.
Not too long ago,I posted a similar theme on the straight pool forum. I quickly found that I had no idea of the class of player lurking behind the screens out there. There's good and bad, as in anywhere you go. I'm glad I learned my lesson quickly, and wish you the best of luck.

Wow, you really know how to sweep a girl off her feet!;)

I have been checking out the postings on azbilliards for quite some time now. I have come to the conclusion that most of the participants in any given thread do not have a clue as to what they're talking about.
Most are either novices or wannabes. The knowledgable people can't get a word in edgewise. Thats why many have given up on this site.
Why can't the younger crowd learn to benefit from the experience the older guys have to offer. I guess its the same generation gap we have to deal with, with our teen age kids. Stop posting inane comments just for the sake of expressing your opinion if you don't know a thing about the subject at hand. It will make for a much more enjoyable experience for all.

I'm a woodworker of sorts and I participate in a usenet woodworking forum. We have the same problem there and the consequences of bad advice from "novices or wannabes" take on a new dimension. Getting bad advice on your or stroke or shot selection can cause a lot of problems for your game, but getting bad advice on using a 3HP table saw or wiring a 220V circuit in your home can be life threatening. Believe me, you can find "advice" in that forum that will kill or maim you or burn your house down!

That said, the really bad advice is pretty quickly identified by the more qualified posters and I think that's the case here too. As a novice myself, I find that I can often learn from the qualified responses even if the original post is not so great. THAT is a credit to the quality of the AZ forum!

Which cue plays the best and why?

I have never been much of a cue stick afficienado.
Always had one but it usually got stolen, or I turned
it into kindling. (After missing yet another easy shot
for the cash) In my road days you did not walk into
a pool room or bar with a custom jointed cue. You
just played "off the wall"or you lost out on 90% of
potential action. All the cues that were popular then
Rambo, Balabushka, Gina, were hit and miss. Some
played good, some didn't. Most of the modern prod-
uction cues made nowadays are much more uniform.
Custom cue makers are light years ahead of the old
masters due to technological advances in material.
Bottom line is a race car is only as good as it's
driver . Spending $3000 for a cue will not make you
a better player. That requires dedication on your part

One of the better players (if not best when he is playing) is a poster here when he gets time - Jimmy Mendoza --- .

Yeah but when was the last time JimmyM passed along any secrets about pool? NEVER :) He's old school... keeps his high level knowledge to himself...

Lassiter, Jimmy Moore, Ronnie Allen and many others who went on to
become champions.

I think you're talking about someone else, as "Jimmy Mendoza" of Phoenix, AZ is not old enough to have taught any of these guys anything;)

In our days SJD it was the Bar Stool. Or the Bathroom stall wall. People will always have opinions and it is just a way of life with the evolved mammal species. Only now we have electronic transmission. People are still talking out of their ass or trying to be cute but things havent really changed. However because we do have a transmission method that includes more people, there are more good intelligent people that can chime in as well. I am pleased that Mark Griffin, Greg Sullivan, Bob Jewett, Billy Incardona, Grady Mathews, John Schmidt, etc. are generous to jump in the fray and give us their well worn expeience. There is good and bad in everything only it seems that the bad get more attention because there is so much more drama and comedy in it.

Wrong impression???

You are absolutly right, The good on here is well worth putting up with the bad. I was a "newbie" to forums when I posted that a while back. I was happy to let it die. Not that I feel much different, just wiser now.

I usually keep the exploits of my previous life private, but since you let the cat out of the bag ...

How many people on here know how good Jimmy's Dad played? Jimmy plays good, but Pepe was a killer, especially at One Pocket or bar table Eight Ball. I kept trying to beat him back in the 60's, but finally I gave up in frustration. Pepe was giving me 9-8 when I played my best. I doubt that Jimmy even knows that.

Pepe's road partner was Baby Huey, another strong player who still plays good around Southern Cal. I could actually beat him once in a while. :)

Maybe it's because I am young... but I am a little insulted by this. But if that's the way it has to be around here, please do tell what the cutoff age is from "younger crowd" to "older guys", so that us young folk can sit quietly in the corner and be seen and not heard...

Granted, younger people can learn a lot from listening to the experiences told by those who have traveled those roads before... but it is very small minded to think that learning can't happen the other way around too. The older, more experienced people on this forum aren't too full of knowledge to learn something from someone younger.

I'll take it one step further and say I don't believe there is any reason to make a distinction. Let's just all post and learn from each other. But that's probably just my naive 26 year old brain talking...
of course your right, if you have something knowlageable to say this old f--t would like to hear it ! but the reason you have two ears and one mouth is so you can listen twice as much as you talk.
