A word to the wise guys

I hear you, but I have learned plenty here, and recently too.

This place is a lot like a great pool room, filled with folks of all shapes and sizes, lots of woofing, plenty of trash-talking and BS, some scamming, some action, some great information, some smart people, some dumb people, really just a little of everything. Like a pool room, one has to navigate towards that which interests them and steer away from that which doesn't. Hopefully, there is enough of what works for you to make it worth all the stuff you have to put up with worthwhile.

Its fun here.

Kevin

Exactly my thoughts. I hadn't played in 35 years when I took the game up a couple years ago and stumbled upon this site. I have learned things here which helped me a lot. I have also wasted my time trying things that were garbage. You can't expect every post to be some earth shaking information that will improve your game but the information is here if you pay attention.

I tend to agree, but also I've frequently been impressed with the depth of knowledge of many of the posters. Sometimes they get a little chatty, and the forum would be better served if they used personal messages instead. But on the non-pool site there are a lot of pompous and self-righteous posters that could use some restraint.

I;ve found that on any online forum you have some idjits as I like to call them.

Idjits (idiots) are rampant on the internet forums and unfortunately, that's not likely to change. On Azbilliards, you have a LOT of people so you're going to run into more idiots here than some places, and because the very nature of idiocy doesn't allow for them to be aware of it, they are going to run their mouth, or their fingers in the case of internet forums, whether we want them to or not. We just have to be able to sift through it and hope that the more knowledgable players and posters will chime in and correct anything that will hurt someone's game.

How many people on here know how good Jimmy's Dad played? Jimmy plays good, but Pepe was a killer, especially at One Pocket or bar table Eight Ball. I kept trying to beat him back in the 60's, but finally I gave up in frustration. Pepe was giving me 9-8 when I played my best. I doubt that Jimmy even knows that.

Pepe's road partner was Baby Huey, another strong player who still plays good around Southern Cal. I could actually beat him once in a while. :)

Like most pool players who gamble a little, I have spent my pool playing career going from the penthouse to the outhouse and back and forth again. One of the highlights I remember was when Morro Paez had me stuck $500 at the Golden Cue in Rosemead playing 9 ball. I borrowed $500 from Dado, jacked the bet to $100 & ended up around $1,200 winner. Pepe, who had never shown up at the Golden Cue, knew I had $$ now and came in the next day. We played some one pocket for $200 a game and he promptly relieved me of $1,200. I had heard so much much "I don't play one pocket" from all the Mexican players, they actually had me believing it and I wasn't prepared for the game he had. John Henderson

I have never been much of a cue stick afficienado.
Always had one but it usually got stolen, or I turned
it into kindling. (After missing yet another easy shot
for the cash) In my road days you did not walk into
a pool room or bar with a custom jointed cue. You
just played "off the wall"or you lost out on 90% of
potential action. All the cues that were popular then
Rambo, Balabushka, Gina, were hit and miss. Some
played good, some didn't. Most of the modern prod-
uction cues made nowadays are much more uniform.
Custom cue makers are light years ahead of the old
masters due to technological advances in material.
Bottom line is a race car is only as good as it's
driver . Spending $3000 for a cue will not make you
a better player. That requires dedication on your part

Dick

Hear, hear. True words, and those were my days as well. Off the wall or go home drunk and broke and peed off...........and the key is as the man says, dedication........:D :D

Rep to you my learned colleague.

There are alot of know it alls on any specialized type forum, be it billiards or hotrodding cars. For some reason the ones the stand on the tallest soapbox to scream their opinions are usually the ones whose opinions do not have much merit. It is what it is, the internet hasn't changed much in the last decade or so. There are alot of good players on azb, but alot of them lurk and rarely post. Dick, I have always liked your postings, especially some of the ones you have made on onepocket.org. Your old school action postings are the nuts!

jcin I must say I completely agree with everything you have said. I believe you have summed it up very well. Sort through the bs and enjoy and learn from the rest. There are some very knowledgable people here.

with regards to the OP, I agree with many of your points. Over time, I have tended to post less and less, only because the substative discussions are becoming fewer and fewer.

I don't think any member here objects to anyone asking questions. I think the frustrationcan be sometimes found in the replies though. Too often, these very same know-it-alls dispense misinformation and swear by it as gospel. It would benefit all here for ALL of us to excersise restraint in offering our replies.

What I find worse though, is the hijacking of threads by means of UNFUNNY humor. My biggest pet peeve here is when a serious thread is thrown off topic by the injection of a "drive by" moron, who throws in a 1 liner, only to follow that post up with 5 or 6 more posts referring, clarifying and restating the original joke. If you want to be a comedian, go to funny.com.

If you ask me, that more than anything, has really crippled AZ the most.

is the one that doesn't get asked. One should never hesitate to ask a question that you don't know the answer to. It may sound foolish to some, but the only way to learn what you don't already know is by asking.

Stupid questions don't irritate me nearly as much as stupid explanations.
