Dave...Charlie Ursitti is an icon as far as pool history goes. His personal interactions, memories and billiard collections span a dozen decades! Should be very interesting! We'll be waiting...

As you may have noticed, the show was running late because of Mr. Bond's interview with Mr. Ursitti...
We then ran into a technical glitch which actually turned out to be an unexpected loss of internet service in Mr. Bond's area which lasted pretty much all night.

Everything appears to be fine now. We apologize for any inconvenience and will be issuing refunds immediately :) lol

I've known Charlie since the 1970's and can confirm that his knowledge of the game and its history is encyclopedic.

Well nice surpise eh?

I've really been enjoying your programs, but can't usually listen to all of it in one sitting. When I go back to it, I can't figure out how to skip back to where I left off. Am I missing something? When I click on the time bar it only holds the playback for a second.

Thanks for putting all of this info out there, and thanks to all of the contributors that have participated.

It is indeed! And he's a very nice man, always willing to share, always a great story to tell  And for many reasons, we have him to thank for most of the pool on TV throughout the 70s and early 80s

When you go back to listen, try starting the program at the beginning again, and then give your device a minute or two to load the whole show or at least buffer most of it, then try skipping forward to the place you left off.

To Scott Lee....
You and Randy talked about mantras... Please elaborate a little. Did you mean to suggest that ones PSR should be the mantra, or that a PSR should include a mantra? And if its the latter, what might be an example?

" I love myself and I cook awesome..."
" I love myself and I cook awesome .."
lol

TO EVERYONE ELSE:
Did you agree with what Charles said about player "personalities" ?

No

Look a great promoter needs to be able to sell ice to eskimos. Sure it is an easy job when the athlete has character but the great promoters dont rely on that. Minnesota fats was not just the character either, but in reality he was the great promoter during that match. He did the promotional work of a Don King or Dana White and if Minnesota fats would have chose to he could have been a promoter of great pool matches that did not involve him... but he was a self promoter.

Don King and Dana White sign lots of guys and they promote. Sure Don will cash in big when he has Ali to promote along with him but he was able to generate excitement for Holyfield fights, Julio Cesar Chavez, even Mike Tysons imo was the product of great promoting of Don King. Tysons would not have been nearly as successful if he had not had Don King to tell you about him and generate the buzz that surrounded him.

Dana White has turned guys like GSP into superstars and GSP has nowhere near the personality of a Minnesota fats. GSP might have about 1/4th the personality of a Corey Duell and GSP'S fights are boring on top of that but White takes a fighter on a win streak like GSP and he finds something he can use to build an emotional attachment with the crowd and make people want to watch. The UFC has been able to promote GSP into one of their biggest stars even with his personality.

It is true with other sports too. Organizations can build excitement for THEIR EVENTS through great promotion no matter who the players are.

Good promoters are just good promoters and they can't just rely on the personalities, or more accurately in pools case, the players to promote themselves.

I agree with Charles that having "personality" sure helps, but you're also correct about the promoters job of selling the event.

On the Jan 23rd show (ABR) I ranted about that very thing; the fact that the viewers need a reason to care, or some kind of emotional connection to draw them in, whether it be for the sake of love or hate. And that's what good marketing and promotion can do by creating the buzz around an event. As a matter of fact, many of the ppv and streaming matches as of late are completely overlooking this aspect. It's simply not enough to pair up player A with player B and turn the camera on.

It's marketing 101 that is keeping what could be a successful streamers trapped in the doldrums. If there is no wind, you must blow. If the tail won't wag, then wag the dog.

1. Attraction
Get the attention of the masses.

2. Emotion
Draw them in.

3. Loyalty
Keep them in.

4. Conversion.
Get their money.

Rinse and repeat
