Hi,

I had to share this with you AZ.The other day I came home from work,and to my surprise I saw my youngest son(9) watching a WPBA event on the tube.It was Allison Fisher against???:o -but anyway,I was amazed at how much he was into the match.I mean,his little brown eyes were glued to the set! I could not believe it.

What really got me was when he began telling me what he heard about Allison from other kids .He said"daddy,marcus said that she(pointing to Allison Fisher) is the best pool shooter in the world!- She's kinda pretty too daddy."I laughed so hard,I almost coughed up a lung! a part of me wanted to say something that would have been more appropriate for adults at that moment.But I found it somewhat odd that Allison Fisher is known even amongst casual,non-pool playing kids(granted they watch ESPN and ESPN has WPBA contract) and thought of as not just the best female player,but the best player in the world.He asked me if I could beat her,I said "oh no son,she's too good for me"He sort of gave me a dissapointed look(kids think you are invincible) and put his focus back on the match.

I took the opportunity to have a little discussion with my son about pool and great pool players as we both watched the conclusion of the match.I told him about Buddy Hall and Mike Sigel and told him about Bugs. I expressed to him who he is(from my perspective) and told him that he is very ill at this time and needed prayer.He said he'll pray for him,and he did.

Children are a blessing.They can be a pain at times,be very costly,but at the end of the day you thank the big guy upstairs that you have them to brighten your day.Just thought I'd share that with you ..After all,we're all like family here .

Thanks for the story. Kids are what life is about. They come into this world with no prejudice's, no attitudes and it's up to us to try to instill that which will help mankind to evolve into something that resembles a civilized species.

It happens one mind at a time and it sure is taking a long time.

Walt knows me well enough to know that my post is entirely serious. I think it is great that his son is interested in pool and that the other children know anything at all about pool. I am also happy that I won a nice meal on a small bet. I guess I could cut Walt in for the appetizer if he comes down to Metairie but he would be dodging a fork trying to get a hand into my seafood platter and I don't share bread pudding and rum sauce with anybody!

PS Walt are you getting your son on a pool table at all? Bowling alleys usually have tables youngsters can play on, I wouldn't know where else a minor could play. If you want him to have a love and respect of the game now is the time to build it, in a few years he probably won't have time for dad.

Good question,I have sort of shielded them(I have 4 kids) ..I don't know if that's the right word,but I'll just say that I have'nt exposed them to pool for a number of reasons .I did a thread a few months back that sort of touched on that topic.My son had a little bit of exposure to pool this summer in camp,but he had'nt said anything to me about how he has liked it so It surprised me somewhat to see him actualy watching pool on TV.

One day soon I need to finish and post my full review of The Billiards Den in Dallas. It is very close to something I have daydreamed about for many years. It is an adult recreation center focused around pool. I have thought that a family recreation center, think bowling alley focused on pool instead of bowling, might be the way to bring pool into the mainstream. Have some six and seven foot tables at heights that children could shoot on comfortably and of course plenty of full size tables and some separation for an area for serious play. There also would be areas for other things and a grill/cafe style food area. The variety not only brings in cash but gives the family members less interested in pool something to do while those intent on pool are still at the tables.

The real question is do we want our children seriously involved in pool?

Jim, I completely agree KIDS ARE WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT!!!! Along with the example we set for them, and this is where our society is failing currently.

By the way, Walt welcome back, and thank you, I just won a $50 bet from another member that you would be back in less than a month.

Walt, I'm really not surprised to see you couldn't stay away. I sure as hell can't! But I like that story. A lot. It does put a smile on my face when kids take an interest in pool. We need more that do.
 
I'm envious in a big way. I got married a year ago and somewhat late in life (I'm 39), 1st marriage, no previous kids. My wonderful wife is 30 and one of the 1st things we wanted to do is have some kids. Turns out that due to some health problems on her part it is gonna be difficult, not impossible, but gonna need some medical assistance. If and when it happens, one of the things I look forward to with the kids is passing along the knowledge I've gained in life, and hopefully it will involve my love of pool. Keep your fingers crossed for us. Thanks.

Hmmm. Is it just my cynisim or is there a fishy smell here? Can you say collusion? :D (Sounds like Walt should maybe get a jelly roll)
