Accu-Stats Invitational, Parsippany, Sept. 2008

I bought my tickets. I'll be up there for the 4 matches on Thursday. I'll be going early to play somewhere if not Comet if anyone wants to play some.

At the Cometbilliards.com website the rates show $5.50 per hour for all players until 6pm. Thats not too bad if they mean for all players on a given table. :)

I'm hoping to be there all 4 days if all is ok on the homefront. I have my hotel room reserved and tickets also. :)

I'm pretty sure that means per person. I just called them and they and another place about 6 miles away called "Rockaway Billiards" both said that they would probably be able to work something out.

I was told that the cost is $12 per match. If there are 5 matches per day it will cost $60 for the day to watch. I was also told that for each match you pay for, you get to choose a dvd from the accu stats collection. So it is like buying a dvd for $12 and getting to watch a match for free.

If I understand the Accustats email correctly, $12 admission fee per match gets you a free DVD of anything in their catalog. That's hard to pass up.
Since the event begins at 7 PM, I was hoping to go up there during the day to play all day either Thurs, Fri, or Sunday then watch all matches at night. I was hoping there would be an all day rate of $10 or so, but a fellow named Lombardo who played in the round robin of the World 14.1 told me they have no such rate there. Maybe a nearby pool room does.

If you play by yourself, you can get a 'practice pass' for a month for $50 at Comet.

I'm gonna try to get down there at least one day.....I'm about 2 hours away.

Yes. A correction though, there are only 4 matches per day, so the total would be $48 for the 4 matches and 4 DVDs.

Thanks Nostroke. I'm just too far to take advantage of the monthly pass. Nice meeting you.

There is a lot of info about the tournament on the Accu-stats home page now at http://www.accu-stats.com/ including the schedule. Play begins on Thursday and Friday at 7PM which makes it nice for the audience members who can't take time off from work. It looks like play on Saturday will be from noon to midnight.

I just spoke with Danny Diliberto who may come up to Chicago for some more lessons in September or October.

In any event, he was very excited about the format, the venue and the players.
He and Billy C are commentating.

I can't wait to see this stuff.

I hear that Parica used to play a lot of 14.1, but in this group he has to be the underdog.

Didn't Jose just win a 14.1 tournament in California about a month ago?

Just got back home from the event. It was a lot of fun. Great pool room. Great atmosphere.
Yes, Thorsten ran a 149. He had a decent break shot on the 149th ball and got stuck to the pack. He tried a long shot up table jacked up and just missed 150. Apparently the difference between 149 and 150 monetarily is about $500. He just laughed it off though. It was a great run to watch. Along with about 20 others, Ralf Souquet, John Schmidt, Bob Jewett, 3andstop and I were all cheering him on. Cool vibe in there, and a great arena.
Jose Parica ran about a 65.
Ralf Souquet ran a 69.
John Schmidt had absolutely the worst luck you can imagine. He basically did nothing wrong, but the balls just hated him today.
Lots more action to come the rest of the weekend. If you're nearby, go! If you like Accustats DVDs you're actually making money on the event. A $12ticket per match buys you ringside seats and a free $26 DVD. Can't go wrong. It's a lot of fun. Go early and bring your cue to play. Nice big room.
I had a great time playing with 3andstop who doesn't play much but still plays great. We had 3 great matches.
It was a perfect day of pool.

Oh yeah, and you could overhear a few things from the commentary booth from Danny DiLiberto and Bill Incardona. They were cracking us up.

anybody know what happened tonight??
As bluepepper said, it was quite an evening of 14.1. There were four matches:

1. Souquet/Schmidt: Sou: safe ; Sch: 15, safe; Sou: 60 and out, continue to 69.

2. Hohmann/Archer: H: safe; A: 2; H: 1; A: 29, foul, for 30; H: 40 for 41; A: safe; H: miss; A: 21 for 51; H: 19 and out, no continuation.

3. Schmidt/Parica: S: safe; P: 14, foul; S: 14, foul; P: 14, safe for 27; S: foul; P: 33 and out, continue to 65.

4. Hohmann/Souquet: S: safe; H: miss; S: 34; H: 60 and out, continue to 149.

In 1, Ralf played a combo at 30 and the ball hung in the pocket, but the cue ball followed forward and knocked it in. Later he got through a couple of tricky situations to continue the run.

In 2, Hohmann shot a very bad opening break shot in which the cue ball barely made it past the side pockets. Minor miscue? In Archer's 29, the ball's never cooperated, and he had a lot of work to get that many. The run ended on an unexpected scratch: from a ball close to the side pocket, the cue ball went diagonally straight into a head pocket. Later, Archer played a "swing shot" break to loosen the remaining rack and the cue ball passed through a window in the balls and ended with a difficult long shot. Hohmann's final break shot had the break ball between the foot spot and the center spot with nearly a straight shot to a foot pocket. Hohmann followed straight to the side of the rack -- he had been playing position to the side pocket, I think.

In 3, both players scratched on bottom-of-the-rack break shots. Parica used plain follow on one and scratched one rail in a foot pocket, while Schmidt must have kissed on two balls and the cue ball looped with follow straight into scratch.

In 4, Hohmann's initial miss was a nine ball by the foot spot and the cue ball nearly in the jaws. Ralf's opening break had left the balls fairly loose but without the usual back-row ball near a pocket. The 149 was fairly smooth -- much smoother than Hohmann's play in the Archer match.

Bob, did John miss or play safe against Ralf? I thought it was a safety. He tried to leave him long, but it didn't work out. In retrospect he later said that he should have taken a foul.

Jeff: Are you going to all of them? More fun than the world 14.1?

I had fun at both. There's just a different feel. The pressure is really on in this even with the lag. And the opening break is crucial. It's also more casual in a way with pool room noise coming from beyond the curtain.

No, that was the only one I'll be seeing in person. I may do the stream though. Not sure yet.
