Only the Best at the “Make It Happen” Straight Pool Invitational

The “Make It Happen” Straight Pool Invitational, produced by Accu-Stats Video Productions will take place August 10-13, 2013 in the Simonis Arena at Sandcastle Billiards in Edison, New Jersey.

The players are: Danny Harriman, Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen, Oliver Ortmann, and John Schmidt*. These players were selected by Accu-Stats as the best straight pool players in the world.

For four days, these superstars will compete in a “Double Round Robin” format, a total of 20 matches, battling it out on a 9’ Diamond table with Simonis 860 cloth. Each match will be 75 points with a 30 second shot clock. Runs of “50 and out” or more may be continued for bonus money.

This is the third event in the “Make It Happen” series produced by Accu-Stats. Once again, we are offering an attractive $300 package to the public. Those who “Make It Happen” will receive:
• All 20 matches on DVDs ($200 value)
• Free admission to the live event ($160 value)
• Free access to the Live Pay-Per-View on the Internet ($60 value)
• Billiard author Phil Capelles’ “Break Shot Patterns” book ($50 value)
• A commemorative shirt ($20 value)
• An original 8”x10”group photo signed by the players (priceless!)
• “Shout Outs” on the air
• A listing of your name in the closing credits of each DVD
• A chance to win $1,000 in our “Knock-Out Challenge”

The event will be streamed live as a PPV and recorded for DVD and TV production.

Accu-Stats Makes It Happen

Dear Pat and Dennis:

The check is, as they say, in the mail.

thinking about it, sounds GREAT. just one question... why no races to at least 100? the magic number

and... do they already know if they play during the day or in the evenings? might be interesting for european fans but if the stream is at midnight....

The matches could be longer because if a player is on a run of 50 or more and ends the games on that unbroken run, he will be allowed to continue the run and win extra cash. I think a run of 100, 150, 200, etc. will put more and more cash into the players' pockets. This is a great incentive for these world champion players to put together some serious high runs.
Pat's format of twenty matches in four days works out to five matches per day. Usually, there's one or two matches in the morning, a break for lunch, one or two matches before dinner, and then two matches after the dinner break...all on New Jersey time.
The shotclock will keep things moving along, but these players generally move on a pretty good pace, anyway.
As usual, the Accu-Stats events are First-Class all the way. The players are invited,,,they pay no entrance fees or expenses. Each match has a guaranty of at least $1000 going to the winner.
This event reminds me of the good old days of 14.1 Invitationals...Double Round Robin, the only way to really determine who is the best. No easy draws here!

nice! if i can pay via bankorder (a check would take a little bit long to the US ;) ) im in!

who do i have to contact for the banking informations?

thank you a lot

I'm sorta in the camp that a race to 75 is way too short. All of these guys can run 75 at the drop of a hat, particularly on new felt, clean balls etc....

It's like an equivalent to a race to 3 in 9 ball, which says almost nothing about who is better.

I'll still probably buy the match, but I'd be more impressed with a single round robin race to 150 or 200. Followed by playoffs for the best record, etc....

Don't mean to be a downer, but just my two cents.

According to Pat, the streams are live at 2pm, 3:30pm, 7pm, 8:30pm, 10pm, New Jersey time.

As far as why the matches are to 75, Pat says this: " I chose to have two 75 point matches instead of one 150 point match. Remember, it is double round robin. The reason: 150 point matches too often are too long and boring (and I love straight pool). The few times that they are exciting is when there is a high run involved or a close match at the end. 75 point matches has both. They keep the viewer involved more of the time. For instance, in a 150 point match, when the score is 35-20 and the players are taking fouls and playing safeties, the viewer does not feel the pressure (as well as the players) because although a mistake at this time can be a game changer, it usually is not. In a 75 point game, the intense pressure is there throughout the game regardless of the score. The viewer may not leave because any mistake can mean the match. Also at any time, a player is never out of the match. Either player can win the match at any time. In our 75 point games, you will have more close matches and more high runs because the player can continue if he is on a run of 50 or more"

I remember when Pat had his last straight pool challenge. Thorsten had a 129 ball run and John Schmidt had a 179 ball run. I would expect them to go beyond the 75 marker quite a bit.

Do you have a credit card you can use? I think that is the preferred method. It will be necessary for Pat to get a commitment from a lot of people before this definitely will happen.

Why does it seem more difficult (for me anyways) to pocket balls in straight pool vs. 9 ball?

1. Position is far more intricate.

2. More traffic on the table during your effort to gain that intricate position.

3. Comparatively, there simply is no penalty for missing in 9 ball.

( you miss in 9 ball, perhaps you lose that game, no big deal, you re-rack and play another dozen separate games. You miss in straight pool and it could cost you the entire match. Much more pressure. )

BTW, understanding the format, with these monsters playing, I'd like to see games to 125 myself. These guys can get through 2 racks in the time it takes us mortals to consider how to attack one rack. I wouldn't think the extra time involved to go to 125 that significant.

But, on the other hand, I'm sure Pat thought this out better than we did.
