Accustat commentators

Build your own commentary could happen if TAR, AZbilliards, or some other site like propoolvideo.com had a "pool night" with a chat room. Maybe have a couple of regular commentators like Billy, Grady,etc... and let them pick people occasionally to chime in.

Accu-Stats has a lot of old classic matches without commentary; I always thought it would be cool for someone like AZ to show them with chat at a specific time and maybe have Schmidt, Blackjack, Nevel, or any other knowledgeable player do some commentary along with the match being played.

I really miss Grady doing these Accustat matches. The commentary team of Billy and Grady was the best of all time. They could give Mitch and Ewa the seven and the breaks. IMO.
 
Well I'm obviously out numbered and I didn't mention any names because I respect everyone at accu-stats and I don't see any point in calling people out.

This was more of an opinion than anything. I probably should have worded it differently so it wasn't so blunt.

My apologies to those who work hard in the booth. However I still stand by my opinion.

One thing I'm not too fond of on the TAR matches that modern terminology, as someone else put it. It irritates me to no end seeing a good shot and then hear the commentator announce "that was pret---ty strong" like they're talking to their buddy in a pool hall. I don't know, from what I've seen of the TAR matches it seems like everyone is trying to use the coolest phrase or lingo and hoping to get a sound byte from it. No offense intended to any of you that have done that, I'm just not fond of that style.

I agree with Hal. as much as I love accu-stats and What they've done. I love the commentators. But there are some few commentators that I dislike (Not hate) just dislike a little. I've always loved the 90ish videos of accu-stats. and I still watch them till this day. I watch the 90's videos like 10 times each. why? cause the commentators makes the game so interesting and exciting for me. whenever its

Johnny archer.

there are some more to this list, guys who makes the game lovely to watch. but can't list all the names, Thanks.
 
I am always surprised when I see these threads that almost nobody ever mentions Mark Wilson. I think Mark Wilson is a fantastic commentator with great insight.

I like the other favorites, as well, particularly Billy Incardona (probably my favorite) and Danny Diliberto (a close second). But I think that Mark Wilson brings some tremendous insight into the game and I prefer when he works with someone like Billy or Danny.

Perhaps I am the only one?

LOL...nobody is trying anything. That is just how we talk in real life. I think one of the biggest problems in most pool "journalism" or broadcasting is that everyone tries way to hard to sound and act like a network team and very few have the skill to carry it off so it just looks cheesy IMO. I would rather have the guys in the booth be themselves instead of trying to copy something from 10 years ago or act like an ESPN play by play guy.

To me the color and personalities surrounding the game has always been as interesting as the actual play. We have caught heat for the slang and "lingo" in the past and I fully expect to in the future because we have no plans to change. If someone spends anytime in a real action room or around real action players you are gonna hear things like:

"That was pretty strong" = "Gee Bob that was executed nicely"

"That is stronger than goatsmilk" = "Gee Bob that was executed very nicely"

"He killed his apple there" = "He was able to control the cueball on the break and leave it positioned in the middle of the table"

"He loaded that up with inside schniz" = "He put an extreme amount of sidespin on the ball called "Inside English" which is a difficult proposition"

"This out is harder than Chinese arithmetic" = "The route is fraught with peril" :D

...and all kinds of colorful stuff. Maybe we should start doing subtitles?

I think it adds to the experience instead of detracting from it. Some won't agree but life goes on.

Ive been down this road once before, and was TAR and feathered (no pun intended) so this maybe the wrong place (and only place) to criticize TAR, just my experience.

I wasn't really criticizing as much as I was just saying which style I prefer. I'm probably too used to watching Accu-Stats tapes.

Okay good point, I guess you werent really criticizing, its just I made a more pointed observation on too much slang used in the gambling subset of the pool world, using TAR as an example, and was flamed for it. There are a handful of commentators I like, but my problem is the yes man inside the booth with the expert can drive me nuts. Allen Hopkins with Jay Helfert would be good. Or Jay with the enthusiastic scottish guy. Just no Jim Wych or Mitch Lawerence and you instantly make watching a match.....watchable. And I think the game has passed Danny D by a bit, although I do enjoy some of his stories.

Bill Incardona and Grady Matthews are the best commentators in pool period. Nobody has even come close. Bill I think is great because his knowledge is a great learning tool for up and comers who are watching the accu-stats matches. Others I have heard are passable but not as informative.

TAR, please don't change the commentary one bit. I too enjoy the common pool lingo and agree that some pool commentators just try too damn hard to sound like an ESPN broadcast.

Pool is all about its characters, road stories and just billiards stories in general.

Keep going with the pool lingo, I wub it along with quite a few of your fans.

This is a very relevant thread!

Hal...I agree with you. Here's something that I noticed, watching the U.S. Open golf tournament yesterday, on t.v. One of the commentators (obviously a highly skilled player) mentioned that he could tell exactly what kind of stroke Tiger was going to put on the ball, BEFORE he shot! He did this several times...explaining the placement of the hands on the grip, and the grip pressure, while Tiger was making his practice swings, before the shot...and then he would stroke it exactly that way! It was amazing to me, how well the stroke was articulated, so that even a layperson could understand it. That's the kind of commentary we need in pool matches.

Mark Wilson is incredibly informative. I love when its Danny D. and Mark together. Two totally different perspectives. I think of it like this... Mark is one of those technical, high end cat burglars and Danny D. is a Mike Tyson street mugger. Both get the job done in a very effective way. Actually, I would love to know if Mark is still giving lessons.
