Adjusting cue butt thickness n modifying pin

Hi, i have 2 Olney cues and i find the butt a little too "thick " or " fat " as im really used to a really skinny handle.

Is there anyone whom i can send the cue to slim the handle down and will it be expensive to do so ?

Also , can anyone change its existing pin of 3-8-10 to 3-8-11 ( im used the hit of this pin ) and the shaft thread to a 3-8-11 ?

Will it be highly expensive ?

Any info is greatly appreciated :))

Thanks

It's going to lighten the weight and move the balance forward.

Get the original cuemaker to change it. He'll have to adjust for everything.

I would recommend ryan theewen at muellers if you cant get the original cuemaker. youre looking to spend a couple hundred at least, even more if they are wrapless. the entire cue would need refinishing. best bet, sell the cues and get another maker with a thinner butt.

Do you think you can tell the difference in "hit" between a 3/8x10 and a 3/8x11?

There, I asked it first.

I dont know if i can tell it but what i can be sure is i've always enjoyed playing more with a 3-8-11 as i "feel" it allows me to feel the cue more.

Just my opinion n 2 cents :)

What you are asking for will be expensive, and I doubt that you will find many cuemakers who will do it. Ryan Theewan is a possibility. Cues will have to be retapered, refinished, rewrapped, and joint reworked, also. No way to know what they will play like after a bastardized re-taper. Then the shafts will have to be re-plugged and retapped.

Best bet is to sell the cues that you have and buy a cue like you want. Have one built exactly to your specs and be done with it. Don't butcher someone else's work and then complain about the way your "Olney" plays.

Slim handle and 3/8x11...seems like you are looking for a Southwest.

Guido Orlandi is a Master at that...

my thoughts too

Have to agree with you.
Op should buy himself a SW or a DPK..
Sounds like you are out to destroy a good cue

Those have fatter handles . DPK does not use 3/8 11 either .
Olney has a dual-taper on his cues . The handles are actually slim .
Re-tapering the butt would ruin the hit .
Never mind the cost.
I cringe whenever someone has to blowtorch SS steel screw.
It could destroy the cue .
That's why I use brass joint screw these days.
Easier to machine one in case it needs replacing .

dpk

Thanks guys for all ur valuable input.
please do know that im relatively new to custom cue world n i was asking if my idea to better modify it to my preference was actually viable.
But im glad to learn altho somewhar disappointed that its not pragmatic and not a good idea :)

Good move. If you can't adjust after a few months (yes, I said months) , it's better to find a playing cue already matching your taste. Any effort to radically alter the playing characteristics of a custom will not only run the risk of ruining the cue, but will undoubtedly hurt the value and make resale more difficult. Once you play with the cue for a few months and adjust to it, chances are your old cue will feel very odd by comparison.

Changing the pin would be a waste of time and money. You would not be able to feel the difference between the two. As for Retapering the whole cue... just buy a new one and sell the Olney imo. Or as others have suggested, commission a new cue from someone you like. It's a buyers market right now and there is a huge supply of quality cues on the used market.

I told Guido about your dilemma. He'd be glad to visit with you about this problem.
