Advice for DCP

another good practice game that allows you to measure your improvement:

play the ghost for 10 racks....and keep track of how many balls you pocket in 10 racks.

then you get a 'score' for every 10 rack set and can see if you are improving or not.

for reference, i've noticed bar league players get around 30-50
better league players are in the 50-70
decent to good gamblers are 70-90

Your trying to hard to break and run. Instead just try to make every shot count. The break, control the cue and use a good powerful stroke. Then if you have to push, think about a good one. Then play it from there attempting to make the smartest shot possible every turn with good execution. When you mess up just regroup and keep playing hard.

Also playing the ghost is fun. If you need the ghost to spot you go ahead and take some weight from him to make it a fair game for now.

Pool

I have played for 46 years, and yes, I refer to luck and the Pool Gods like everyone else, but over the years, you realize the 'luck' often talked about is just a variation from what was planned which is preceded by how you evaluated the layout and situation to begin with.

Examples:
1) oh, the cue ball rolled too far. Well you hit the cue ball at that speed, so it rolled just how you hit it.
2) I didn't think the cue ball would hit the 4 ball after making the ball. Why didn't you? You miscalculated the angle.
3) I didn't think that would scratch!

So, stop blaming it on 'bad luck', when the responsibility lies with you. You are not evaluating the layout and shot properly. Many people can not play well because they simply don't 'think' right, about the layout, about the shot, the proper english, the angles, the speed. And to further complicate matters, THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CORRECT THEIR THINKING. This is where a good instructor comes in. Bad habits feeds other bad habits.
Good habits provide a good foundation to build upon.

Here's the magic formula for Pool, so pay attention:

It boils down to EPE. Evaluation, Preparation, and Execution.

You can not prepare properly if you evaluate incorrectly, nor will you execute in the right way. Each step is dependent on prior steps being done correctly.

Where do you fail? Is it the way you evaluate a layout, a shot? Is it the way you get down and aim for a shot? Or do you just miss when you think
you should have made it?

Evaluation and Preparation though go beyond the table. It also applies to yourself. Did you prepare yourself to play your best? Especially important matches? Sleep, diet, drink, emotionally stable, relaxed, etc..

I think you will find that all the top performers in Pool pay attention to the things I have mentioned on a consistent basis to allow themselves to play the best that they can. Just off the top of my head, it would probably benefit a lot of players to just know what Ralf Souquet does in the way of preparing to play in a big tournament, and how he goes about it.

the part about "Being scared i will look incompetent" is a very good post, and is perhaps the crux of the matter. as i've said before, in all the other sports i took up i was usually one of the best. like James T. Kirk, i dont like to lose.
DCP

James T. Kirk?

In the end, DCP was more like Denny Crane.

yeah, Neil, its all good stuff. and like someone said, its been mentioned before by many different posters. and like i have said before, i read all of the posts and listen and pay attention.

but.........like tonight, after spending several hours at the office today, and then making roast for the first time (somewhat successfully) i went down to the table tonight and decided to be upbeat and break some racks. and guess what? yep, the results went like this:

no shot
nothing down
no shot
impossible spread
nothing down
scratch
nothing down
no shot
nothing down
impossible spread
impossible spread
nothing down
nothing down
a difficult chance i messed up
no shot
nothing down
nothing down
impossible spread
no shot
nothing down
nothing down
impossible spread
nothing down
no shot
nothing down
nothing down
impossible spread
no shot
give f***ing up. i slumped in my chair and asked out loud why oh why oh why i dont ever get any decent chances at running a rack of 9-Ball..............

Nine-ball is rotation pool right? Instead of shooting the 1 thru 9, try shooting the 9 thru 1. Yes backwards. but it's still rotation, right?

I hear stories of people beating their golf handicap by playing the back nine first or playing from a shotgun start. You can change your thinking by changing your expectations.

Try it! Break and start shooting the nine first, then the eight, and so on...let me know how it goes.

Best,
Mike

Mike...That is too much for DCP. Having worked with him, I believe I have a pretty good understanding of his 'pool psyche'. Since he is now banned here, through his own whining, at least he'll be able to read. Here is the REAL solution for Mike/DCP: he should ONLY use the 1,2,3 or the 7,8,9. Learning to run three balls, in order, with EASY position (that means it's not whether you can make the shot, but instead, the angle must be 30 degrees or less). You absolutely must be able to do this anytime, on demand. That, imo as an instructor, is much more valuable than trying to run the entire rack. When Mike can do this 100 times, he may actually begin to improve...both his attitude, and his confidence (which is directly linked to his success ratio). His negative mindset is his greatest hindrance to ever improving.

this thread and neil's post sums up why dcp started to get on my tits. so many people pour their heart and soul into long posts full of the best advice in the world just for him and yet he doesn't listen or appreciate it.

This thread is mainly for DCP.

No disrespect Neil, but it shouldn't be.

First let me say, your idea that the post might help other developing
players is spot on. No doubt it will. There is a goldmine of helpful,
even vital information conveyed. I often participate in threads
with much the same thing in mind, passing on things I have learned,
more for the benefit of newer players who may someday read, than
the active posters. So, good post, good for you.

Now... the DCP part.

Pardon me for playing the armchair psycologist but,
DCP's posting and general involvement/participation on this forum
has NOTHING, let me repeat, absolutely nothing whatsoever,
to do with becomming a better pool player.

He needs to suffer and whine in public - period.

All you fellows with good advice for the Proto, are,
at the end of the day, just enablers for him.

Next time anyone is tempted to 'help' DCP, remember the
over quoted cliche:
'repeating the same action, and expecting a different result
is the definition of insanity'.

I'm with Rod on this one...the guy started out in reverse and near found a forward gear. I figured this guy was a put on from the beginning and nothing, absolutely nothing he did ever change my first impression of his posting...the guy is phoney...period. Now his is gone...good.

I feel so bad.. I am pretty much the cause of this "wonderful" guy no longer "contributing to the forum.

Garsh, I wish we had alcomahol over here, so I could drown my sorrow. :D
