what age did each pro begin playing? I think a thread like this will be good if we can get a list together. i was wondering about john schmidt specifically, but am interested in all responses. thanks charles

I couldn't tell you about most, but the couple that I do know is Jeanette Lee @ 3 years old, and Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant @ 7 years old.

I'd be interested in hearing these as well. Great topic!

John may know better then me :D but I heard he started playing when he was around 18-19 years old.

Jeanette Lee didn't start playing until she was in her teens...about 17 I believe. Johnnyt

maybe seriously, but she has been playing since she was 3...I've seen the pics. I believe she even says so in her book, I'll double check when I see my sister tomorrow.

Most top men pros that I know or have followed started playing under ten years old. Another thing they have in common is their father or someone else in the family was a good pool player. They had a table at home. Their father or another family member owned a poolroom. Ask ten top pros sometime. You'll be amazed how much in common they are. Johnnyt

Maybe your right, maybe she started going to poolrooms at 17. Johnnyt

well I was hoping Jeanette's website might say...but no luck there. It only mentions when she turned pro. In any case, I've seen pics of her as a little girl playing pool.

as the guys goes...you're right, most start under 10 years old. Landon Shuffett is already playing amongst the pros at the age of 14 I believe.

I also thought she had a late start. I searched and everything says she started playing when she was 17-18. You may be right though and they just mean she started playing seriously at that age.

I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain I'm not....I'll double check when I can get my hands on her book tomorrow and let ya know what it says.

Apparently I am wrong lol She can't find the book, but everything I've found on the internet says she was 18 when she started, turned pro at 21. There's a pic of a little girl standing on milk crates playing pool somewhere...I could've swore that was Jeanette...maybe I'm losing my mind...lol I do know that "the little girl" in the pic is a pro player, just couldn't tell ya who now.

Anywho, I apologize for the misinformation...

i hit my first poolball at a neighbors house on a bar table when i was 2 weeks from my 18th bday.i told my family i thought it was interesting.i then at 18 2 weeks later went into boyces billiards in hesperia ca and started playing in a tourney once a week for 5 entry fee.i thought it was fun.then one night keith mckready came in and gave mike boyce the owner a big spot and beat him for decent money.i had seen keith in the color of money and i could not believe how good he was at pool.i really got into pool in lake tahoe in about 94 when i got a job up there working at edgewood golf course.the season ended due to snow and i lived in an apartment right behind this little biker bar .i was 21 and not into pool very much.i had no cue or would recognize any pro or anything like that.one day im in there shooting for a little money and this guy com in and tells me theres a place 30 miles away called cuephoria in carson city nevada.he says people like jeannette lee ,bob hunter are there plus many others who play just under them.i had never heard of jeannette or bob hunter or any pro but said lets go.after going there i was amazed and went there once a week when this guy would take me ,i had no car, anyway i became friends with hunter and the rest is kind of history.

I started when I was about 10. I quit and restarted many times in between then and now. Something always pulls me back!

Shane started at 18 months, I first heard of him when he was 6. I was the lucky one to be his first opponent in his first State tournament. He was very capable of getting out from the break then. 8 ball or 9 ball. Two years later he was runner up in his division.
