pool is a fickle mistress.... I love it much more when I am not playing it!!!

when I am shooting, I constanly find my self cursing it.......

One of my favorite pool books is McGoorty..... especially the story of Lem the Barber.... I love a great pool character story....

Interesting thread, hunger strike. Pool IS terrific for those of us who love to play and watch, maybe even more so because the professional pool world doesn't offer the big bucks. More opportunity for us amatuers to watch, interact, and maybe even compete with the best players in the world. Various responsibilities kept me out of the game from the mid 90's until just last year, so the biggest positive change for me is internet/streaming media. I used to starve to watch the pros! So little TV coverage, limited access to tapes from Accu-stats. Funny, I used to to think all the gambling and hustling held the sport back, but now money games are one of the main things I miss. I'm still not convinced that gambling is good for marketing the professional game, but there's still something very gladiator-like in putting up your own money and facing off with someone one-on-one. That's something you can't get with tournament play, though I have all the respect in the world for that arena as well. I also love all the characters! Some can get a little boorish at times, but in general it's all good. :thumbup:

Gamblin' ain't the problem with pool, see? The whole world is in love with gambling, see? Lotteries so prevalent that ya got Mega Millions and Powerball sold at the same stores; Casinos in so many states they'll have to change the state capitols to follow the money; poker on tv so popular that people actually know the names of pro poker players. My post on the poor etiquette of approaching strangers to gamble on pool aside, gamblin' ain't the problem why pool ain't so popular, see????

What I love about pool

I love that it unbridled aggression of head to head competition for the cash, just put up or shutup.

I love those that bark and mean it, I even love those that don't mean it because they amuse me.

Nothing better than locking up and finding out who's Mas Macho.

What other sport does this at the amateur levels with such regularity?

Man I could only wish I lived in those times. Now even decent sized cities don't have them. A city near here has almost 50,000 people... two pool halls that I know of. One went to shit and the other shut down.
 
Poolrooms remind me a little of TV's 'Soaps' and 'Springer' shows. But much, much, much more real.

The characters are real, though the stories may not be. If you miss a couple of weeks or months-you are way behind on the local dirt. The action reports get more inflated and innacurate as time goes on. If you weren't there to sweat it-pick the report you like.

After an extended absence-you can spend days or weeks catching up on matches, confrontations, in-line/out of line matchups where the locals backed or took the other side (openly or secretly). You may learn that bad blood has developed between partners. Or longtime players got 86'd for ????/nobody really knows.

Usually plenty of often re-told stories to keep us entertained. Truthfullness is not a requirement-sometimes a hinderance.

But-its not a "Soap" or "Springer" and for sure not 'gossip'. This sh1t is for real-even if its not the real deal. If there's not enough happening-no problem-we make stuff up-after it gets repeated many times-it becomes real or close enough for poolroom purposes.

I might be wrong-but that doesn't make it not so. Bullsh1t has a long shelf life.

The razzing and harrassing, the nicknames and the name calling, the 'there's my action' and the 'wachwannado' and 'we thought you died' greetings are the ways we welcome each other back and renew aquaintenances. Boys club and locker room expressions of friendship and re-connection.

This is normal right? Well, for us it is. Add a couple friendly FU's, and w'ere good. Kind of hard to explain-but it works.

Ain't much of anything in small towns anymore, but in the towns that still have a pool hall, the pool hall is probably the best part of the town. Ain't a damn thing wrong with that! Pool is great, society ain't.....

yeah, you've gotta fade a lot of bad music these days. I love to load the jukebox with more mellow songs when I have a match coming up. Makes the hip hop idiots crazy. But I still love the juke box.....

The thing that has hooked me about pool is the mental aspect. I tend to get bored with things if it is not challenging mentally. With pool u constantly have to think about what ur doing and I love it. I think pool is the most mentally challenging sport there is. I like everything about pool but the mental challenge is what keeps me interested the most.
 
What I love about the game is,
“Everyone is a player, but no one every plays.
Everyone is a winner, but they don’t ever win.
Everyone was a champion when they played, but quit because they got tired of winning everything.
Everyone has a friend that will play you, because he don’t play anymore.
Everyone hasn’t hit a ball the last 2 years.
Everyone has been practicing the last 20 years to become a pro.
I could keep going, lol

I am like you, I love everything about this game.
