Alex Lely, www.alexlely.com, one of Europes best players, has chosen to give up pool.

He is former European Champion, Mosconicup-player, and just won the Eurotour in Weert in September. He played the WPC in Manila, but is eliminated.

He wanted to quit earlier, but when I talked to him during the European Championship this year he said that because of the IPT he was now very optimistic about the future of pool, and wanted to continue and practise even more.

Now that the IPT more and more looks like "pools Titanic" he has unfortunately chosen to resign.

This information is confirmed by the coach on the Dutch team.

A sad day for pool... :(

Gosh, I surely hate to hear this. The man is such a natural talent.

It is though, his decision and I wish him all the best.
 
Id like to hope he is just taking a nice vacation to get himself together.

Hopefully he'll be back renewed and enhanced, so then I can watch him duke it out with the best.

This IPT thing has frustrated many people.....I think maybe after he's had a rest from the sport for a while, he'll come back around....if you really love pool and billiards it never leaves you......besides, with KT's new announcement.............who knows? Time will tell......

I hope that he comes around 100%.

i agree, he will come around if this b.s. gets straightened out.Great player.

Pool burnout

Sounds like he's suffering from "pool burnout". Focus and interest start to wane, game starts to struggle and the disappointment grows because you know what you're capable of but can't quite reach that level anymore.

An extended break usually cures this problem and the player comes back better than before. There's such a thing as too much practice and the game eventually takes over your every thought. The only way to get the mind to relax about the game is to convince it that pool is over with completely. Once the brain gets some quality time focusing on other junk, it will be interested in pool again.

Most of the IPT players will likely go through a mourning process as they watch their dreams fall apart. Depression usually kills willpower and passion for the game. Alex is making the right decision and he'll be better for it. I'm almost positive you haven't heard the last of Alex Lely.:)
 
I count Alex as a friend, and yet, I see nothing unhappy about this occasion. Alex is abandoning a pursuit he has deemed impractical in the context of the things that really matter to him in life.

He will take a new course in life, and I'm excited for him. I will miss my friend, but I will rejoice in the fact that he has the courage, conviction, and initiative to plot a new path for himself and his family.

Alex has poise, dignity, and integrity, and those qualities will take him a long way in all future endeavors.

I hope he stages as many "comeback tours" as Striesand and Cher...and as successful.

And while your "Titanic" analogy is apt...it is also true that in spite of that tragedy, world travel, including the ocean-going variety has grown vastly in its "wake"...pun intended.

Let's hope that future of pool is more like the Phoenix than the Titanic.

There are LOTS of ways that could happen.

This statement sounds too familar here in the states. There are sooooo many great players here that went back to work and a different life. I'm sure it reflects on our performance in this years Manila event.

I also want to wish Alex all the best in his future enterprises. I also want to clarify Alex is not quitting pool, pool simply no longer comes first in his career but as he said himself on the dutch forums: "I'll always be a player". Good luck Alex.
