I received last week a copy of Alfie Taylor’s book, “The Other Side of the Road…a Pool Hustler’s Tale”. He graciously sent it to me gratis since I was selected in one of his contests. I read the entire book in about three innings! I encourage you all to add this wonderful book to your libraries!

One way or another, I’ve been acquiring all of these pool history books (such as Jay Helfert’s “Pool Wars” and Robert LeBlanc’s “Confessions of a pool hustler”) since I find it so interesting to read about the adventures and characters associated with hustling. It is truly a lifestyle that is almost incomprehensible to most of us.

In “The Other Side of the Road…a Pool Hustler’s Tale” you get to hear from Alfie’s perspective as a hustler in the 1960’s and 1970’s who knew all the tricks to acquire money from his hapless opponents. He readily admits that he was not a world beater, but simply knew how to choose his victims and match up in his favor. He did this successfully for many years, travelling around from room to room, often in his motorhome.

In Alfie’s book you see parts of the hustler’s life that are exhilarating and we want to imagine ourselves as participants. Other elements are terrifying and involve truly life threatening events. Either way, you can’t help but put yourself in those circumstances and imagine how you would have fared. That is what is so captivating about these stories.

I find it fascinating how many of the heroes and villains intersect in all of these books, and we get to see them from different perspectives and experiences. Alfie befriended and travelled with Minnesota Fats, Eddie Taylor, U.J. Puckett, Buddy Hall, Weenie Beanie, among many others. Alfie and Eddie Taylor, in particular, were road partners for many years, having a very profitable collaboration and close friendship. It was wonderful to hear of his experiences with these legends of pool.

Thirty years ago, Alfie decided that he had had enough of that life and ultimately became a very successful businessman. I am now eagerly awaiting his next book that will chronical that transition that led him to Morocco, among other places.

We all like success stories, and Alfie’s is definitely one.

I got mine too !

Thanks so much Alf.

I don't know when I will get some to really get into a few chapters but let me bump this thread.

But I did look it over.

It has over 200 large pages of text with a glossary and a nice bunch of pictures in the back pages. I did get past the introduction though and it sounds like my kinda book for sure. All about the tales of pool !

I'll be back after I read few chapters, tyvm again Alf.

Nice Review! I purchased it about a year ago. It's a must read if you like stories about the road in its hayday.

I would absolutely love to get a copy, but the $25.00 price point seems kind of steep?

I was under the impression this is a paperback book? Am I mistaken?

Book Review

I just finished reading Alfie Taylor's 'The Other Side of the Road..a Pool Hustler's Tale'. This book focuses on Alfie's 20 some years of hustling pool on the road, mainly in the southern states. The types of characters in this book are a thing of the past in pool. The hustlers like Puckett, Fats, and Titanic Thompson, all of which Alfie has stories about in the book, used their wits and skill to make the 'easy' buck. Why it's a thing of the past, probably has several causes, today, information is at one's fingertips and legalized gambling is everywhere.

This is Alfie's story, and well chronicles his many experiences travelling and matching up in the poolrooms all across the south. This type of life seemed like a great adventure for a young player from yesteryear, but Alfie describes all of the reality of it, much of which was not all fun and easy money. He visited a few jails and was on the wrong side of a gun several times. One begins to wonder how he stayed at this lifestyle for 20 years, but there is a certain lure of the lifestyle where you aren't on a clock and every day is an adventure with the possibility of a big score right around the corner.

This book is a great read, with some great stories from some legendary players of the past, it's a great story of an old school hustler's life in the 1960's and 1970's. Highly recommended!!

Book

Hey Alfie,Your book is the real deal.Brings back alot of great memories. The 60's and 70's were the great pool years. A must read if you like the greatest hustlers of all time.

I would like to have produced a less expensive book, but cheap production on any of my products isn't my style. Maybe if it reaches Kindle or something, it will be less.
But, for your information, when you start printing in color, which I did (about 30 pics), the printing costs sail. To this point there haven't been any complaints from those who put their money down.
Keep it reasonable. Alfie

I received the book yesterday, and finished it last night. Great book! If you like "road stories", this book is a "must have". Alfie tells it like it is without pulling any punches. Book is set up a little different than most. He starts with a story, then jumps to a different story, then ties the two together in a way that makes perfect sense and makes the first story better by having filled in the background to it. Different, but it works quite well. Fun read. I recommend it to anyone interested in pool stories. Parts of it had me laughing out loud. Especially the extent U.J. puckett used to go to!

Too bad those days are gone for good. With todays prices, it's almost impossible to do extended road trips anymore.

Great book Alf !!!

A must read !!!

Hey Alf, question for ya.

Back in the day a friend of mine who grew up in his dads pool hall moved out to Texas and he used to refer to UJ as Utley. Seems he was a friend of his.
Also I remember him sayin he played at a room called Fast Eddies or something like that. Question is did you ever cross paths with a kid they called "Rance" ??

He was a very good friend.

Some really funny bits in Alf's book. I laughed out loud over the trick he pulled on Grady.

Yes, a great read!
