Alternatives to Brazilian Rosewood

Here's a few pics of some rosewoods I have found to sub for BR. The first two pics are of wood that comes from the eastern hemisphere, half way around the globe from Brazil. The second two pics come from Mexico & central America. All have similar weight & working characteristics, even that distinct BR smell. The stuff in the bottom two pics rivals the tone of BR & the top pics surpass, in almost every way. I will admit that it's easier finding the actual brazilian rose than any of this stuff but none of this is illegal & it's much, much cheaper.

I was following the other Brazilian rosewood thread & just wondered if anybody else has actually attempted to substitute BR. The only edge BR has over these woods pictured is prestige that comes with those materials we can't have so easily anymore, like BR, ivory & micarta. Don't get me wrong, I like brazilian rosewood just fine. But to be honest, unless it's a figured &/or colorful piece, the stuff is ugly. I have a small stash of BR for when people ask for it, but from a realistic & practical perspective, i'd prefer to use the alternatives.

The distinct tone, none imo.

In order for you to accurately assume BR has a truly distinct tone, you'd have to compare it to an array of other similar woods. Considering there are hundreds or even thousands of variations of rosewoods, i'd feel safe in saying no cuemaker has ever been able rule out all of them. Personally, I have tried a bunch, maybe 25-30. In those few, I have found at least 5 that I personally cannot definitively identify as having a tone unlike brazilian. One relatively known wood to cues that sounds virtually identical to BR is cochen rosewood, but it looks completely different.

Give me straight grained Brazilian Rosewood and Acer saccharum over any other woods, and creamy white Ivory too.

Having them is comforting, finding them is thrilling, combining them is rewarding.

And besides - if a customer wants Brazilian Rosewood - he wants
Brazilian Rosewood - he doesn't want a substitute no matter how
much the cuemaker may think it is similar. At least, that has been my experience.

All I ever seem to find is the plain, boring looking stuff. Sometimes I get lucky & catch a nicely figured board.

I'll take #'s 2,4 and 5 from the first pic...#2 in the second...#3 in the third... and #1&5 in the fourth...Thanks!

PM me with a price ;)
