After winning only $30? I think you did the right thing. I wouldn't have paid. If it was more, maybe... but for thirty bucks? No way.

IMHO, it would have been a nice gesture on your part to pay his time, but certainly not required. When the total table time ($24) is almost as much as you won, I would say that he is out of line to get mad at you for not paying his time. When I am playing someone I know for cheap stakes, I might offer to pay their time if I won enough to pay the total table time, but strangers are a different case.

Nope. Not for that kind of money. If you busted him for a fair amount maybe, if you feel like it. Or if you agree to it ahead of time. The way we play here the loser always pays the time for both players.

No, but to avoid this problem try to specify as much as you can before you play. A lesson I'm still learning.

Hell No!!

You cannot be serious ..He asked you to pay for his time?..The only guy that won was the pool room owner .

Btw,thanx for the kind words on the observation thread .I thanked you privately,but I am thanking you publicly.:)

I've paid table time when I win over 150 several times. Many of those times I say I'm not paying the table time and see their reaction. If they dont get mad and go to pay it I'll step in and pay their time for them. If they get really mad I let them go ahead and pay it.

Generally i look at it if i win 5x what their table time is I'll have no problem paying it.

thats what i was thinking to.thank you

The players must talk about that before playing. Generally, the looser pay ... or 50/50, I've never seen the looser asking the winner to pay his part.
IMO, you were right.

Whatever the case...

the rules of engagement should have been agreed upon before the start of the warfare. Negates the need for discussion and heartburn after the victory flags have been raised.

We will pay the losers time if the winnings are enough. $30 isn't enough in my opinion.

Here's a few rules of thumb I follow:

1) If you win A LOT off of someone and they are good sports about taking the loss, pick up the time.

2) If you can pay the time and still come out with about 2/3 to 3/4 of the total take, why not? It may mean that your opponent is more likely to match up with you again.

3) If you aren't really too thrilled with either of those, decide before each set/matchup what to do about the time thus avoiding the dispute.

4) If a person expects me to pay the time for them, I generally NEVER do. That's just wrong on their part.

You should use the money you won to invest in some spelling lessons. If there is a chance you could play him again you might have considered paying half of his time.

It's your call in the end, but IMO, you should have paid.
1) Marketing - he'll want to play you more in the future;
2) Paybacks - if you were to lose to him in the future, you can have him pay;
3) Karma (if you believe in that) - it will come back to you, one way or another;
4) Free Pool - you were already ahead, got free pool for the night, and still had money left -> even after paying his time.

You didn't bust this guy, so there was no "obligation" to pay, but I would have paid for the reasons above.

Hey now, at least he didn't spell straight 'str8'.. points for making an effort!
Yeah, but what about the fact that he completely let him slide for all the grammatical errors?

If your sole income comes in from gambling I'd say no. But if this is a friendly game I might do it for the first time but establish after that you will split time no matter the outcome. Then if he really goes off do pick up the time. If he is an easy game and want to continue playing him over the course of a longer period of time why not pick up the time? Unless youre broke and really need the cash. But then again why are you gambling if you are.

The best thing to do, whenever matching up like that, is to stipulate before you start playing who will pay the time, or if it will be split. Especially when the cost for the time is likely to become substantial. Easiest way to avoid an argument later on...
