Amazing and Sad story

As some of you might already know, I make my home in SE Michigan. Not much of a hotbed for pool but every now and then I get to hear some amazing stories from years past.
Anyway, at the pool hall in Lansing not too long ago a couple of us were talking about some of the local players and one in particular who stands out (I changed the name for his privacy) named Mark. For a little background Mark won the bca junior nationals way back in 1990 and at one point was considered one of the stronger 9-ballers around. However, like a lot of youth in that place and time he began to experiment with some hard drugs.
One morning some time in the early to mid nineties (I believe), the guy shows up at one of his buddies house after they had all been partying. So they wake to find Mark f**ked up, almost dead after being up for days, high on god knows what. They all insist that he comes with them to the E.R. because they think he is ready to die. He resists violently and heads to the basement where the pool table is kept.
At this point Mark proceeds to break and run 18 racks of 9 ball as everyone watches shocked with their jaws half-way to the floor. By the time this had all come to an end, he was obviously in bad shape and was rushed to the hospital. He lived but not without a huge price being paid.
As far as I can see, the story seems to be true. I've spoken to one of the guys whom was a witness to it and he isn't the fibbing type. Sad thing about it is that he (Mark) still shows flashes of his old self, but is nothing close to what he once was. You can tell by his speech and affect that theres been some neurological damage of a large degree. All of this withstanding, he still manages to place in the money at the local tourneys and is considered a bca "master" on the barbox.

Thoughts and comments are encouraged.

Good story, but if you are changing the person, maybe not put he was a BCA juniors champ in 1990.

Also I believe the name you gave is real close to the name of his brother.

Sad but so often times true, Drugs and pool don't mix well, no matter how much someone might think they can run 18 racks with the correct mixture.

It's interesting you used the term mixture.

A great player, GREAT player. stopped in the pool room several times and told a friend there he needed to go into the bathroom and get his "mixture" right.

After that no one was even close to him and he would pull out the impossible type gaff shots firing them in.

When I was in Knoxville Tennessee....

I was in Knoxville and some road players came through on their way to a tournament in Georgia. I watched them go into the bathroom and obviously "get their mixture right" It obviously didn't work since I took them down for a couple of hundred. Although they had taken a hundred off a local before I stepped up. They were a couple of preppy looking dudes, someone told me one of their names once, but all I can remember is John something...

It's a pretty common saying in pool rooms. "if he gets the mixture right blah blah

He's not the only player, we had one here too that was great and now is 'permanently altered' so to speak. A shadow of his former self. Hopefully "Mark" can still get straightened out. I've played him a few times.

I think you have more than one.... but if you see the shorter (and rounder ) one, tell him grindz says 'hi'.

It's always sad to hear of someone pissing their life away on drugs. The ones that have alot of talent at something, especially.

I do find it a little hard to accept the guy being wasted to the point of people wanting to take him to the ER, and then he stumbles to the table and runs 18 racks of 9 ball, and after the last rack has to be rushed to the hospital.

Running that scenerio thru my "common sense" brain, it keeps getting rejected as not possible.

I pissed alot of my life away with drugs, but I never had any talent:)

Glad to hear he's still around, I haven't been in the area for quite a few years and have wondered how he's doing. If you can send me a PM where he's playing out of - I'll be back in the area in a few weeks and would like to see him, last time I talked to him he had a business (or worked for one) cleaning beer lines at bars. tell him it's the "nuclear plant guy" from St. Joe.
BTW-him running 18 in that condition or any other is very possible.

Yeah, if you wanted to use him as an example without exposing the real person...a 10-second search on google told me all I needed to know. Might want to edit the specific tourney stuff out. (and then the quote in post 2).

The title of, National Junior BCA Champion, seems to have a curse, attached to it. He's not the first, and probably, not the last.

Reminds me of Luther "Wimpy" Lassiter who died slumped over the pool table. Pool is a game, and pool is life.

According to the book "Hustler Days" by R.A. Dyer, Lassiter retired in 1975 from pool. He was inducted into the BCA hall of fame in 1983. He died sometime later at his younger brother's house while sleeping. I have read that book at least 20 times over the last few years and still could sit down and read it again and again.

There about to take him to the ER,and he breaks and runs 18 racks.
Im not saying it cant happen but i find that really hard to believe.

The Zone, No Fear!

It maybe hard to believe but it certainly can happen, I've seen with my own two eyes, a "man shooting-up cocaine" for 24+ hours playing pool back in the 80's , after the 24th hour break and run 18 racks!

(And No!, I'm not talking about my brother!)

He was in the Zone, had No Fear of the shot at hand, could jump balls and draw back for shape, cut impossible balls in, park his cue ball dead center every break, go three rails for shape thru traffic, and park whitey on a dime in the window!

The man was totally unaware of his surroundings, all he knew WAS, he was playing a game called 9-Ball, he didn't know if 10 people were in the building or 100.

I've personally known many a pool player experiment with drugs, some could handle it for the short ride, but after years of use, their brain would be so confused on the proper shot, or get easily distracted, that they know longer were a threat to beat anyone with ability!

Dope will let a Man shoot like "God" for a short while, but in the long run, you will fade to a "Dim Memory in the Pool World!"

If a poolplayer, that has used drugs, can change their life style, there is hope!, to becoming a great player, "if you are not already gone", because there is a "Point of No Return!", then all you can do is get off drugs to save your Life, but playing great pool will be out of the question.

I totally hate drugs and drug users, they are the "Scurge of the Earth!"

I, by no means am a Saint, but I'm not in the back room either!

A poolplayer can reach the ZONE with much "Dedication and Discipline" for the game of Pocket Billiards!
