During the finals of the one pocket event this weekend, Joey Gray, whose pocket is the top left here, was faced with this layout:

After looking at everything for a good long while, he gets down and fires the cueball into the 1 ball, which then caroms into the 9 and throws the 15 into his pocket. The 9 hits the 12, which banks into the 6, which then trickles into his pocket as well. The 8 ball goes off the 2 which goes out to the middle of the table, where the 1 ball glances off and ends up in front of his pocket as well.
:eek::yikes::bow-down:
Here's the resting places of the balls after the shot:

Are you saying a guy can't luck a couple in every once in a while? :) :)

The 6 was definitely a bonus bit of luck :) But finding that combo - then finding a way to get to it, such that it would throw the correct way was genius. ;)

The combo was the shot all day, any other balls that fell were irrelevant. What a brilliant shot! I love playing those. They make me feel like Minnesota Fats from The Hustler, not Triple Smart, though Joey was Triple Smart to make it in the final!!

Yeah someone at the tournament was asking who I thought would win.

Yeah I was there practicing the night the one pocket started. I would've played but my daughter's b-day party was on saturday so I had to fly home on Friday.

A couple of the guys asked before it started who I thought would win. I said probably Joey Gray or Shane McMinn. I didn't know Danny was there.

Yeah I was able to let Joey hit some with my tip and he liked it a lot. I told him I'd give a couple to Huck of Huck Custom Cues to put on for him as soon as they were available.

He said "If they make every cue hit like that, then you've got something there".

It's not genius. It's just utilizing a little knowledge. Same principle is in Ray Martins book 99 Critical Shots and the shot principal is actually a standard principle shot in 14.1. It may look great, but the ball is almost impossible to miss.

True, but to shoot it the way he did took a bit of skill. Most people would have kicked into it.

Joey was playing one pocket like burning hell when he was 13-14.... Me and Bartram had Joey here once when he was that age. We went down to the Lexington All Stars tourney in Kentucky. We sat in the parking lot looking thru the window telling Joey who everyone was and how they played. We sent him in with a cell phone and a pocket of money. He called a couple of times to ask about people and got a couple of games literally because he was so young.... Joey calls and says this old guy Johnny Morrow wants to give him (IIRC) 9-7 and the break and bet real money (more than we sent him in with). So we go in and give Joey more money. We find out that John Hager is staking Johnny, we're friends with John and we slide up and Chris says "What do you think of our boy???". John looks at me and says "I'm f'ed, aren't I?". We tell him he can buy out for far less than what was posted.... John was like "F it.... Lets Gamble!". Joey proceeds to put on a one pocket clinic, wowing everyone there.... We didn't even give a line on Johnny, Joey just played a game that was offered to him....

You have to like John Hager though..... Before, during, and afterwards, not one bit of ill will. Hell, we all went out for breakfast afterwards and laughed about it.....

Cool story. I like that tournament...wonder if I was at this one as I went to several with Oldschool. I remember once Alex got drunk and dressed up like a woman. I also remember meeting a young Scooter and he was like 13 or 14 if that. He was full of energy and barking up a storm gambling left and right with people. Think he trapped up Jeff B getting ball in hand or something twice a game. I was probably 15 or 16 and got trapped by a guy playin 40 a game 9 ball. He let me escape even first night, the next night he heisted me and then on Sunday I look and he's down to final 4 or so in pro tournament. It was a young Billy Young and he was a good player and nice guy. Atmosphere's like this are what made me get the "pool bug." It sucks it's not like it used to be. I am still fairly young but I have some great pool stories and been in some really cool spots and places. It's sad to say I think the best days are gone. Wish it wasn't that way but I guess all good things come to an end. :frown:

That had to be 99 or 2000... I believe that was the year that Truman Hogue was setting off stink bombs inside the tourney room... LOL. That was an awesome tourney, there was always a ton of action! Pool needs about 15 of those type of tourneys a year....

Billy Young could really play.... I haven't heard his name in years.

Another testament to the need of many of you guys to play straight pool. ..... A lot of straight pool.

You'll see these shots like they had neon arrows pointing at them. Honestly.

Or even, just read the "Winning One Pocket" and "Shots, Moves, and Strategies" books.. Plenty of these types of shots in there to analyze.

Short Bus Russ - "I'll take 10-2, sir...."

I did recognize that this is a 14.1 type of shot, so you are absolutely right. Just one of the many ventures I hope to someday pursue.

And to whoever referenced the hustler earlier - I was reminded of that as well! "You left enough." *BAM*!
