'American 14.1'.........................

According to the WPA website, the American 14.1 has been on the calendar as a WPA ranking event for five months. The international Open has also been listed for five months as a ranking event.

Why do you believe players are banned by the WPA from the International Open? I have heard nothing like that. Do you have a reference?
They are not, but whether this is sanctioned or not (I believe it is sanctioned but not as a world championship) is moot until March. Starting in March, the WPA says it will ban (from WPA play) anyone who plays in an event that qualifies for WPA sanctioning but is not WPA sanctioned, and the American 14.1 is affected by this decree..

mario was my favorite for the title when i saw the fairly soft players list. made semis last year, beaten by the eventual winner. but i personally hope for a veteran to catch a gear
Yeah, Mario is a wonderful player with serious title chances in this spot, but surely veterans Immonen, Hohmann and Van Corteza are all threats to get it done here.

Interesting times. With this event being a warm up to the Intl Open, it was a world championship in all but name with a legit deep field of international talent beyond what any other 14.1 event could muster. And there are still names here but with a WNT Ranking 9-ball event at the same time stealing the same warm-up strategy, it does look like the 14.1 field was severely hampered by 15-20 players if not also with WPA drama playing a factor. It makes you wonder if this was a one-time hit or if this is the year a permanent downgrade happened. Because it feels like the WNT ranking schedule is likely to stay packed enough to make this juicy scheduling slot in contention indefinitely.

mario looking to close the winner's semifinal, leading 144 - 97 over corteza. i think bader has been the most entertaining

.. and mario misses within a few points, can lee van make the comeback?

Mario got out in two scoring innings in the single final, 43 and 107,

He had the option to continue as he was on a run of more than 75 when he went out, but since he already had the high run at 170, he decided to call it a night. He would have had to get to 331 for another $1000 for beating the highest known continued tournament run of 330, which Pete Margo did back in the 1970s. Lee Vann had the second highest with a 169.

i was wondering what 330 was referring to. i thought it was bobby c's high run on a diamond lol

well played by mario. lee van and bader were all over the place pattern-wise but still provided good entertainment

I attended on the last two days only but this was a very fine event that featured some stellar play. Mario He's 107 and out in the final was a monumental achievement and I'm sure that few have run 100+ and out in any major straight pool final before. Yes, he ran 170 for the high-run prize, but the 107 and out in the final was the greatest run of the week.

The impression that I walked away with was that Mario's meltdown in the hot seat match actually helped him. because it enabled him to regroup and rediscover his highest level in a very well-played loser's bracket final against Bader Al-Awadhi. By the time the final began, Mario was back in dead stroke, and he took care of business efficiently.

Finally, Peter Burrows brings so much class to this event and makes fans, officials and players alike feel at home. The bleachers from which matches were viewed were great, too. Nice event!

I’m not trying to stir the pot and kick up the muck but why didn’t John Schmidt play in this event? Was is invitational or did he just not want to play? AGAIN… I’m not asserting anything I’m just curious because I would to have love to have seen him win this event.

I've heard that tournaments are not to John's liking. A lot of effort for questionable returns. The last one I know of was a 1p tournament at Oscar's. John got into an "earnest discussion" with someone involved with the tournament and left without playing. He later played Oscar a 1p race to 10 ahead. That was months ago.
