I'm not 100% positive but I think you can get on internet and try your names on DMV to see if the one's you like are already taken or available....Might be a good idea before going down and find out if yours are taken and have to go back..
I found out that if a name is taken it's for life. Only if person actually reports plates were destroyed that plate keeps that name forever and you can't have it...If a car is sitting in some junk yard for years with that name it is still not available for you to use...So that means for several years all names that have been used are not available..Really cuts down on your choices....
