Are there any? I saw Efren's cue at the Derby, and it looked pretty basic. Seems like most of the really good players are using something with a low deflection shaft that's pretty basic.

There have been a lot of cue threads lately that got me to thinking " What top player plays with a really high dollar cue? "

I've owned several cues in the $3000. to $7000. range and frankly have customs now that only cost a tenth of that and play better, much better.

I think the price of some of the cues I've seen for sale are seriously inflated. I also understand the economics of keeping the price of those cues where they are, because some people could lose a lot of money. I learned the hard way that just because a cue costs a lot and was made by a certain cue builder doesn't mean its going to play good for me.

Dennis Hatch plays with a fancy Mike Gulyassy, and Shannon Daulton has a fancy Andy Gilbert. Pictures of both cues have been posted here on AzB.

Scott Frost used to play with a high end Bobby Hunter
Oscar Dominguez plays with a high end Ed Prewitt.
Ralph Souquet plays with a custom Joss West

Go to www.youtube.com and you can search what's in the case.

Pros cues

Jennifer Chen also plays with a very high dollar cue.
Rodney used to play with a Szamboti.
Our own Bob Jewette plays with an original Balabushka I believe

A lot of the Taiwanese and Japanese pros are playing with high end cues like Tad or Southwest.

Frost plays with a very fancy Cognoscenti now, the Hunter is or was for sale in the classifieds here.

Ralf Souquet is sponsored by Danny Janes of Joss East cues and he's never played with a Bill Stroud Joss West cue. Joss East builds production cues in the lower price range and they build special cues for Ralf. Joss West cues are high end customs.

IIRC, Dan Janes, of Joss, still builds a handful of high end custom cues each year.

Bryan Mordt and Andy Gilbert both make great playing cues are really affordable prices. anyone that knows me knows how cheap i am (i'm the no tip ugly girls guy) and i'm currently having bryan build me another cue! i've had several gilberts and his j/bs are the best all around cues dollar for dollar.

to stay on track Rob saez uses a fancy andy gilbert and a gilbert j/b (cocobolo i believe)

Allen Hopkins plays (or used to play) with a Black Boar, and an Asian female player whose name I can't remember right now (damn, this is happening more often) also plays with a Black Boar. Also seems like Gi Young Kim plays a Southwest, and Rodney's Szam was pretty famous.
:p

A LOT of asian professionnels pool players are playing with Southwest cues.

Ralf is not playing anymore with a Joss cue. He is now playing wit an Universal cue, his new sponsor.

Point well made. Many of the pros play with what they are paid to play with.

So, I discount pro endorsements completely when I know the pro is sponsored. It doesn't mean the sponsor makes a bad cue, it just means I may or may not like that cue.

I made an interesting observation at the BCA western championships...the fancier looking cues are to be found in the "a" and "b" players ranks.

The masters players tend to go for plainer looking cues.

I'm staying away from brands and cost here...could very well be that these plainer looking cues cost more than the fancier looking ones. Masters division players tend to select cues based on what feels good to them over how a cue looks.

Always there are exceptions to general rules...
