APA sudden death all the time

I wish the APA would impose sudden death for all league matches. Last week we went 5 hours and wound up playing the last two matches on two tables. This is not always an option, but leaving the place at 12:30 on a weeknight is foolish.

Benefits would be:

1 - Preparation for the real APA rules that are used at higher level tournaments.
2 - Improved mental cognition on a game by game basis. (shooter)
3 - More team involvement. (observers)
4 - Getting home at a suitable time.

What is the usual maximum match time at the higher level tournaments ? I forget.

Please chime in L.O.'s.

I'm no LO, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night .

Seriously, I have walked out of the poolhall/bar MANY times after a league match around 1 a.m. In both Masters leagues I play in, we split tables immediately at starting time and are usually through before 9:00 p.m.

I don't know why this isn't also done in APA Open 8 and 9-ball league play. The places I've always played at, both teams have a table anyways.

In my local APA double-jeopardy league, we have two tables, one for 8-ball and 9-ball and play simultaneously. We start at 7:30... and usually we still dont get done until close to midnight or later.

In the Masters league we start at 6 and usually only have 1 table per match available; but that's done by 9:30 usually.

Probably the one thing you would have to consider is that for some people this is their night out, they don't have to get up early in the morning, and when not playing, they like to watch all of the matches (kinda hard to do on two split tables). I've seen teams that want to split tables, and teams that did not.

I assume it is a local bylaws here, but we are supposed to start a second match table 2 hours after start time, assuming a second table is available (which is always the case in the places whrre we play.).

Most times we're done between 10:30 and 11, starting at 7. Occasionally it can run longer, but that is the exception, not the rule. Many times we'll start the second table earlier, if both teams have enough of their players present at the time. (Since we aren't required to start the second table till 2 hours after play begins, if one team has players arriving later for whatever reason, then we hold to the 2 hour point to start the next table.)

Of course that means that one tesm is scoring one table, and the other team is scoring the other one. With 8-ball, most of us can keep track of both tables, but no way when scoring 9-ball :p

Jim,

In our recent attempt to reach "Cities", we made an interesting time of it. Our league starts at 7 PM. Our first two (2) took two hours to win her match. Our captain then put up one of our fives. An hour and one half later, we were up two nothing. Our captain then put up our other five. He lost on the hill to a much weaker player. This match again took an hour and one half. Just can't get my team mates to remember a well played safety is the most powerful shot in pool. They always try to run out from everywhere. Then, once stuck, they ask for a "time out". Our opponents put up their four and we matched them with our captain. She lost on the hill missing three open shots on the eight. It was now 1 AM. Won my match five - zip to send us to playoff finals for Cities. Got home well after 2 AM. Wish this was the only time it happened in my seven APA cycles. Not *****ing. Just commenting on your post.

Incidentally, the bar we play out of only has one table.

Haha, I laughed at the part with the timeout. I can totally relate to that since I usually get timeout duties. I love it. BIH with a easy pattern and the player doesn't call a timeout. When they are stuck with a impossible 2 rail kick they decide to call a timeout. I remember I was called to the table and the player had a impossible shot. She asked what she should do. I replied "pray".

There is nothing I hate more than being at pool until all hours of the night but playing two tables at once has its definite disadvantages. I might play a different lineup depending how the player shooting does. If my player loses that could affect who I throw up next and vice versa. I don't like throwing two players at the same time for this reason. Just my two cents.

Ha, ha back at you. Love the pray part!! Hope you won't mind if I use it next week?

I agree, playing two tables at once can change how you go about things. Fortunately for us, we usually are at least into the second match and occasionally the third by the time we start the second table, so that's easier to plan for.

That is crazy, my double jeopardy is done by 11 every week, starting at 7. And we have some longer races (I'm a 7-9 and play both every week).

good solution

My situation was for 8-ball league. Using two tables after the 2-hour mark is a great solution when a second table is available. Nobody gets shorted on their race lengths either (compared to my idea).

Another problem locally is that the bar closes at midnight so the place has to remain open for us, which is costing the owner more money because they can't sell any alcohol, etc.

I will find out if we have a timeline for starting a match on a second table.

Seriously though someone needs to shoot down my idea. I would rather get screwed out of my race lengths on league night if things are going slowly rather than at a higher level tournament.

Most of the people I play league with do have to get up for work the next morning...

Wait...what is that ? It is Wed. night again and I am going to play APA 8-ball. Wish me luck. We start in 22 minutes, I better hurry.

Good luck!

Hurry (safely).... You sure don't wanna start late!

Try 4:45 AM

I quit after the conclusion of my first league because I averaged getting home @ 4:45 & had to be @ works for 9:00. I was an 8-9 & played last or second to last all the time & against a 7,8, or 9. some matches were 17,18 & even 19 games. It was not APA. It was a money league. It was very competitive & fun. But gioing to work on just a nap was not so much fun & also ruined the following night.

I got back in BCA & APA when the tops was a 7 & the matches were much shorter due to less competition. I was usualy home between 12:00 & 1:00, but 3 nights a week got old too.

Sleep well,

We have been fortunate. Our local by-laws state we can if we want to split matches on two tables when available at 930. Our Matches start at 730. We are usually done by 1130 without splitting matches on a slow night, even when I play. Only twice can I think of that we split matches and we still got out around 1115 ish.

finished

Got done at 12:10 after a 15 min. Late start. Not certain why the late start. Won 3-2. So an improvement _of 25 minutes. We started on a second table at 10:25, I believe. Anyway I am going to bed.

I dunno, I pretty much consider league night a full night out, where I'm hanging out at the pool hall until at least midnight and often til close (2 am usually). Sometimes I'll get a late night meal with buddies at the korean soup or BBQ joint, or denny's.

It seems kind of lame to treat it like a job where you can't wait to go home and want league to end as soon as possible.

I know most people have to work in the morning. And if it's truly gonna ruin you and make you useless all day, then I guess don't stay out.

I personally find I can function ok. Shot pool until 4:30 or 5:00 am then went into work the next day.

When this happens I occasionally ask my players if they've recently invented time travel. "No? Then I can't help you now." This is only for players who reject timeouts until they're stuck. Otherwise, I try to intervene earlier and ask what they're going to do when they have one buried ball left.

I will find out if we have a timeline for starting a match on a second table.

It's in the league manual... if FOURTH match hasn't started by league time PLUS 2 hrs, the teams MUST agree to split tables.

When was the last time you've seen 3 APA matches over in 2 hours?
