Apparently Everyone Plays Well Enough

I am working on become a great player,

I agree, life is a never-ending learning process. Either live and learn, or stay stupid...as the saying goes. By the way, I'm 60 and playing the best pool of my life. (didn't put myself through college playing pool, but got drunk a few times off of it...)
:p

I agree with your post. I know for a fact I shot better before glasses and two eye surgeries  but it doesn't stop me from enjoying and learning the game.

We had a guy in our league once that said he put himself through college playing pool, yet couldn't make a ball if his life depended on it, and that's really not an exaggeration. My response to him was "so what the hell happened in the 2 years since you go out of college?" And then I kept thinking maybe I should go back to college :D That guy was a hoot though.

Pool with age

I am a young guy who never professed to be any good. My pool playing didn't pay my way through college my ACT score did that for me, but I did make more money playing pool than at my 25 hr/wk job.

The problem here isn't that I used to play way better, now everyone that is willing to gamble plays way better than they used to.

I just nod and comment "really?" and "sure" and "wow" when I hear stories like that. Then I wonder in my mind why that player isn't still that good and why they don't show that skill and knowledge on the table. I'm haven't heard it as much as others, but if I had a dime for each time I have heard someone puff up about their past, I could buy myself a nice-tasting meal.

Age is an exception, but those players usually don't brag about themselves.

I hear that type of story most often if I'm hanging out with fellow workers, friends, or family and get introduced to someone. Someone will state, "Derek shoots pool and he's a good player" and then that person will state, "Really? Well, let me tell you about myself . . ." Seriously, shut the f up.

Personally, I'm too humble about my game since I know I'm no where close to Efren's caliber. When I get to that level, if ever, then maybe I speak about my game. Probably not even then because I like the way Efren carries himself.

That being said, there are actually many fine players just about anywhere you go. More so on small tables.

I used to say "I used to play pretty good" until I actually realized what pretty good is and began to actually play pretty good. Now I realize that I used to suck at pool, but so did everyone else I was playing.

agreed

Too many crutches and not enough broken legs, if you know what i mean. When they miss its "I use to make that shot 10 out of 10 times" When I miss I say crap I better practice that shot until I can make it 10 out of 10 times. I am not saying this about people with true handicaps just those folks who are too quick to blame something other than themselves...

Some of the 'older' players I talk to in my area that have kept playing say that they are shooting just as good, if not better, than they ever have (Stan Tourangeau, Glenn Atwell, etc.). But the guys that quit playing, or don't play nearly as much, lose it or get to the point where it would take years to get back to the ability they once had, and they still might not even get there because of their health or physical condition at their age.

I get so sick of hearing "I used to be good" that I swore to myself that I would never stop playing. I turned 27 on Tuesday, and I feel that I have 50 years to master this game. So, for those of you still playing in 2058, watch out!!

Yeah, some joker named Mark Tadd was telling me about how great of a player he used to be and I was like "yeah right." I was gonna give him the 7 and two on the wire in a 10 ahead set next week just to make it fun...............................whaddya guys think................have I found my fish?;)

Hey Jay thanks for responding. You probably've seen more about what i'm saying than most of us.

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone said that to me. "I used to be good" should be made into a Country and Western song. I actually once practiced with a kid who was about seven years old and he told me he played real good when he was younger. When he was playing all the time. I swear that happened.

Anytime I feel like I am getting full of myself (i.e. full of s#@t) I just go to a Blaze tour stop and go two-and-out so I can fall back to earth and get on with my life.:)

going to be fun for someone:D

Jerzey Joe,
If you're the guy who plays at Clicks Billiards in Orlando, I've seen you play.
You play phenomenally well. Maybe 1 day I'll stop in and you can teach me the finer points of straight pool.:D

Half and half from what I've seen

I am surprised at how many people on AZB claim to be "A" players.

It almost seems like everyone here is capable of putting a 3-4 pack on someone at will

About half of the people I've met from AZ ARE capable of playing really strong and half are so so.... The funniest thing is that most of the people I've met who play strong I don't remember them talking about how strong they play on AZ??????

Of course unfortunately, I haven't been one of those. I sometimes think I'm too quick to say how well I play, and it's funny to go places and have people expect me to play for money, I can't remember how many times I've heard people say that I play too good to NOT play for money....Of course that could be a hustle to try and get me to gamble....
