aramith cue ball cracking

So far I have only read about phenolic tips or just the tip in general damaging the cue balls. Couldn't hitting the CB into the OB cause this too?

These balls have been around for 5+Years. I don't think they are being damaged from abuse.
I am thinking that the problem lies in that fact that a very small percentage are defective from the get go.
What about some of you retailers and table mechanics that supply these to bars. How often does this happen?

As close as I can figure at this time of night, the force at the contact point of tip-to-ball is larger for two reasons. The speed of the cue ball changes more with that contact which means more total impulse and the radius of curvature
is smaller for the tip which means higher peak pressures in the middle of the contact point. But yes, CB/OB hits could do it to, their just milder.

i did this breaking . the ball chiped/ broke open . and there a 4 ball under cue ball shell

Watch your digits Eric;),hacksaw is safe but there is allot that can go wrong with a ball and a power saw :yikes:

I have seen atleast 3 CB's like this, not on coin op tables either. Its almost like a refurb cue ball. You can see the round number spot under the white paint

I know two different people here that have broken these cue balls as well. One was a 9-ball the other was a 3-ball.

Having said that...I'll still take these cue balls over the old slug ball any day! I just won't be buying them.

To the above people i quoted.... It seems like one of the cue balls was a green aramith cougar ball. Were the other 2? Or were they just regular green logo saluc aramith balls? I've had a cue ball chip on me, but it was stolen, so i won't have a chance to try and find a ball beneath it..... :(

The cue ball is a Aramith Magnetic Cue Ball from the green insignia. If you look closely, just underneath the white layer is a black layer which is a ferromagnetic material (probably Iron Oxide) encapsulated in a binder. I would judge it to be a couple of mils thick. Over the black layer is another layer (probably a thermoset phenolic resin with a white pigment) which appears to be about twice the thickness of the black layer. As a base, a snooker ball is probably used. If I'm correct the total layers over the snooker ball is only about 6 mils thick (that's the thickness of two sheets of paper). Surprising that these ,magnetic balls last as long as they do.
