Archer is Team USA Captain with Buddy Hall as Co-Captain for Mosconi Cup

The American team is old news, it was picked many many months ago - Johnny, Shane, Dennis, Rodney and Earl...

i know.
so how can Johnny be on the Team, if he's Captain?
is he a "Playing" Captain?
did i miss that in the announcement?
cause Charlie was Captain @ 2011 & didn't play & there wasn't a Co-Captain.

or is there ONE MORE SLOT open...for CJ or Corey?

Johnny understands how to do this as well as anyone.

I was the "Playing Captain" in 1996 and actually ran out the winning rack against Ronnie O'Sullivan and Steve Davis (Earl Strickland was my partner in that match) to win the cup.

They'll be fine, the role of Captain is mostly to making the schedules and Johnny understands how to do this as well as anyone.

CJ, is that match on video? The winning match is always awesome (when the US wins, lol). I searched in youtube but only found O'Sullivan/Strickland and O'Sullivan/Varner.

Also, do you know how many times there's been playing captains?

TY!

I would like to see it too, it's been awhile - there's a chance I have an old copy on VHS ;) I have a box full of old Pool Shows that I've been involved in, just haven't had the chance to convert them.

I don't know how many "Playing Captains" there's been, we were not selected to defend the title the following year.

Buddy

Glad to see Buddy as a Co-Captain. He's a great player, has vast amounts of knowledge about the game, and will provide good information when matching players up in the Mosconi Cup.

Buddy also did not receive the public recognition he should have, during his glory days for being the great player he is.

I really don't think we are lagging behind on the talent level, but our players are coming up short on the performance level under pressure. In recent years, we seem to downfall on the 2nd day, and then have to have a miracle comeback on the 3rd day. I blame part of this because of bad matching of players to play each other.

.the answer was simply "we'd rob them"..

The fact is there's a lot of luck {no matter who's playing} in races to 5. Shane lost to their weakest player, yet Johnny won ALL his matches....who would have guessed?

Racking the 9 Ball on the spot and making it mandatory to use the "cut break" takes a LOT away from the American players. When I found all this out last year I ask "what would happen if we racked normally and didn't have to use the "Cut Break" every time?"

.....the answer was simply "we'd rob them".....and that's probably true.

WHAT............no wind sprints?

That tickled my funny bone. Thanks for the morning chuckle! :grin-square:

I hope this year that Team USA makes an effort to get red, white, and blue vests or shirts, something that will display the team spirit. Kind of like the same vest that C.J., Bobby Hunter, and Mike Guylassy wore when they were in the Mosconi Cup.

Here's a pretty cool link of the Mosconi Cup statistics on Wikipedia: Mosconi Cup. Ralph Souquet has the most appearances ever, with Johnny Archer as the second most appearances ever. :)

It is a little distressing to see how many American players don't have Wikipedia articles written about them, as depicted when their name is in red font. The blue font means there is a Wiki article. The Europeans have a Wiki editor from Hungary who is contributing many Wiki articles for the European players. He's doing an excellent job of creating a great archival resource for European pool.

Here's a cute shot of Mike "Babyface" Gulyassy at the Mosconi Cup. This is the kind of attire I'd like to see Team USA sporting. I think this vest and bowtie is the cat's meow! :grin-square:

And who can deny the energy that Dennis Hatch brings to the any pool competition. Team USA needs Dennis "Hatchetman" Hatch. He will complement the other players on the five-member team. :)

Win or lose, let's face it. Dennis just makes pool exciting to watch. And he has been scoring some big wins as of late. He's back in stroke and ready to rumble!

I just wish they would release the official team..... whats the big deal?

... or maybe Johnny will announce it on Wed. Come on already.

This is just common sense....and everyone involved has plenty of $en$e.

Anyone want to bet against this line up? :D

Hm CJ,

you seriously think, that just the breakrules have been the reason?
Interesting information.

It's a bit distressing/frustrating that with all the interwebz offers, I could not easily find the answer to:

1) What are the individual records of every M Cup player? I was trying to answer - Who has the best US record? CJ posted it was Rodney IIRC. It was on the net 2 years ago on mushroomsport.com ;) and Earl did at that time. But after Johnny's awesome performance last year, I wanted to update and check. - it's not on Wiki, matchroomsport.com, or readily evident in a google search elsewhere.

2) Who were the playing captains in 19 years of the Cup. CJ was in
'96, per a post of his.

Ipso facto - I am CALLING YOU OUT JAM! The interwebz wizzard of Oz! ;)

Where''s "AtLarge" when you need him???

I"m 100% as Playing Captain, so that's a tough winning percentage to beat.

My playing percentage was good too, but I can't remember what it was.....where''s "AtLarge" when you need him???

POWER Breaks like Shane, Earl, Johnny, Dennis and Rodney.

Not only do I believe this, but everyone on the USA team is convinced as well. The break is a VERY important factor and this method of racking/breaking completely neutralizes the American team's break.....and strengthens the Europeans.

If they racked and broke like we do here in the USA it would be "no contest" (especially if the races were to 11).....this is the facts of the matter and most of the players would agree (on both sides). The Europeans play very well, they just don't have the POWER breaks like Shane, Earl, Johnny, Dennis and Rodney.......it's pretty obvious. 'The Game is the Teacher'

C'mon CJ... you can do better than that....

Earl has to be on the team.I read it on the internet. And besides, Mikala said she'll be bringing a muzzle, so....

Well, to be blunt, the only reason the break is a problem is sheer laziness. Most of the pros don't have regular jobs, they don't gamble much if any, get off the golf courses and start practicing the game you know you will be playing!

Saying after the fact the you don't know the break is nothing more than a poor excuse.
