Archie the Greek--The Worlds Greatest Gambler

....recently they showed him on TV playing in some small limit poker game....

Last I heard, he was President of the Bellagio. The biggest games in the Bellagio are in "Bobby's Room," named after Bobby Baldwin. They play 2,000-4,000 Limit games there every day, sometimes 4,000-8,000 H.O.S.E. gets put down as well.

Are you serious? All you talk about is how much you will bet on this or that, you even answered this thread saying i'll take 5-3 and the pop.

Specifically in the Bucktooth threads you talked about how much you have bet and how much you would bet.

big gamblers bet millions, i have friends who are-bigger than Archie ever dreamed of being. I'm not like that. the Tooth bet was to flip for $50,000-an even bet, at that time in my life that was 2 days income. Now do you consider flipping a coin for 2 days work a big gambler? You just dont understand me or know me-yet judge me, now thats a gamble.

The difference is Archie started with a few thou and ran it into many millions in a short period of time. And he was willing to bet everything day after day. There are guys (like Kerry Packer, Andy Beal and Rosey) who bet millions, but they are billionaires. Archie has more gamble than just about anyone anywhere.

I thought Fatboy was "The World's Greatest Gambler".
nope not me, i never claimed to be a big gambler. i live in vegas and never gamble. wrong again.
Carrying around a bag with $90k or so to the DCC seems to contradict the "i never claimed to be a big gamber" statement. But I, and many other people in the pool world, know you don't like to gamble. My post was nothing more than sarcasm.

You need to re-read Jay's quote below. I think you missed the point again, as usual.

you are correct sir. Amazing to just go from straight gambler to a high level position like that in a major corporation... at least nowadays.

There is no town in the world with crazier stories than Vegas.... i got a few gems of my own that aren't really gambling related, but still outrageous beyond belief.

i think betting like Archie etc is stupid, they all end up broke

ain't that the truth

i think betting like Archie etc is stupid, they all end up broke

I sure agree about that......I watch those high stakes poker games on TV, and those young guys are throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars around like it's nothing....I can't help but think more than a few of them will end up broke after having a few million dollars they could've done something with and set up a good life....I watched some episode where Phil Ivey was making a "prop" bet on the hold 'em flop.....if 2 out of 3 were red or black, and betting another guy $50,000 every hand on it.....crazy.....I think they just gotta gamble every day until it's all gone.....

Of course it's stupid. Anytime you are gambling it is stupid. Vegas exists because of stupidity.

I have always said that in any one transaction (refering to pool or any gambling situation) only one person is gambling. The trick is to know if it is you or the other guy. Vegas does not gamble. They are conducting business. There is risk, but there is risk in everything. As long as you have an edge and the appropriate amount of barrels to shoot, you will win.

As far as who is the biggest gambler, it isn't about the size of the bet, but the importance of the bet. $50,000 maybe a 2 day wage for you Fatboy, but to the Joe on the street that makes $30,000 a year that is one hell of a bet. Archie's story is just about that. He had nothing and was willing to bet it all.

We all talk about the next big pool movie, well folks, if someone was to do one on Archie we would see pool bloom again. At least for a little while. :)

Archie had some balls.

Still does Jason. Archie stays in action. He regularly makes six figure scores and has had his hand on seven figures in cash several times since his big score. But the way he gambles, putting everything in play, he can drop a half mil in one day.

He beat me and John Schmidt out of three thou a year or so ago. John tried to beat the twelve ball ghost. Archie had nearly 10,000 bet on it, three thou with us. This is an average bet for Archie. He doesn't want to play for hundreds, it must be thousands and up.

I played him for 500 a game once and he lost. When he came back he told me, "No more nitting around, bet a thousand a game!" Then he beat me for six thousand! :frown:

Is Archie the greatest gambler? I don't know, but your no slouch or JS by the way. Like I said it is about the balls and to know if you have an edge or not. Someone is taking a risk and someone is playing the odds. Its all about the handicapping.

The importance of the bet to the individual is what makes it a big gamble. The biggest gamblers are not in Vegas or Atlantic city or any other casino in the world. The biggest gamblers play on the biggest stage for stakes more important than money. The biggest gamblers are on the battlefield. The biggest gamblers are the soldiers and the generals in war. The are betting with more than money. They are playing for blood.

God bless our American soldiers.

Correct. The biggest gamblers are playing in the NYSE.

Eric

When you build out a poolroom for 150K (no bank loans) and you have 200K to your name, that's gambling. And then you have to fade six months of meager business before it starts to pick up. Scary!

But I agree with Jason, when you gamble with your life that is the biggest bet of all. You can lose your money and make a come back. If you lose just one time in war, game over!

I believe that Bobby has been "promoted" once more....I think he is actually the top dog on the new "City Center" project. Wynn put him in charge of it and it is - without question - the largest project ever built in this country...... Wynn has faith in Bobby for a reason....

Why so much hate ?

Why u got to hate so much ? U coming down on Eric..aka..fatboy like nothing but a pure hater..I think he is for the most part modest considering what he has already acomplished in his short life..and for the record..i do not know the man..never met the man...I'm proud of what i have done so far in life and i only make a modest 6 figure salary even tho i feel like i've worked hard with my business to get me where i am.with that said...If i would have accomplished what Eric has done in the short time he has done it...I'd be that much more proud of myself...All i'm saying is give the guy a break..I've been around guys that have close to if not more than the money he got..and to tell u the truth...I'd rather not be in the same room with them..But with Eric...He keeps it real & is a guy i wouldn't mind drinking a beer with if our paths ever cross..I've alway called a spade a spade no matter what others think...and in this case I think you are reading this guy wrong..IMO..whatever that's worth.
