I went somewheres tonight to watch a pool league. Dunno if its an APA or VNEA or Local or something else. And I must admit, what I saw was pitiful. I mean really, really bad.

Is this typical of the caliber of play in most leagues? I was thinking about trying to hook up with a team to get some competition but no thanks after what I saw

How bad is this bad ?

You did not describe what is this bad .

He's not being serious. Don't waste your time on this one. If he would let me come play on his table with him I would drive up to Memphis and pick you up and you could go with me. I think we could give him some competition. He can't even run two balls anymore.

Lets put it this way. If some of these people were playing Helen Keller i'd just about put my $$$ on Helen.

No clue what to do, no idea how to move the CB, no thought to the next ball, etc, etc, etc. It was just a bunch of people drinking beer first and banging balls around 2nd.

APA Masters

Join an APA Masters League if you can. We have one at Champions in Frederick, MD. We play on 9' tables and there are typically 12 teams with many strong players. At least 5 players have cashed on the Action Pool Tour and one finished 4th in the State 10 Ball Championship.

Don't let one experience get you down. Search for a quality league in a quality room. They do exist.

I have, in the past, taken a rather harsh position when it comes to league players. Probably because I thought that pool (real pool) should be played in a pool room, I beg your pardon, sports bar and grill. I no longer believe that to be true.
I now feel that leagues, and league players are the back-bone of pool as we know it. Just ask yourself. Without them, where would the rest of us be?
Even though the vast majority of them don't take the game as seriously as some of us older players, what with one hand on a cell phone and the other one on a Captain Morgan and Coke, there are plenty of damned good league players who could clean your clock if given half a chance.
I, for one, am glad they are there. :)

Is that all you gained from watching league players. Were they having fun? Were they trying their best? Was their team supporting them whether they won or lost?

My experience in my league is that there are a few players that can run out on occasion, there are some middle of the road players and there are ones that can't run 3 balls.
Its a mixture of all skill levels. Its a handicapped team league.
My team is in firm control of last place and we intend to keep it.

Oh....ok. :)

I thought he might be one of those players like cue envy that can spot apa 5' s the orange crush.:grin-square:

People that usually post stuff like this just learned how to run 3 balls and are now champs.

Long live the king!

Good luck op your clearly just to good

I'm curious. You have so many posts on how you can't run 2 balls, nothing goes in on the break, no idea why you can't play any shape, and you are talking about people playing bad?

Might not be the best person to judge others.

Well since leagues are usually made up of bad players, with a few good players, some matches are going to take awhile.

Leagues are about having some fun, playing some pool, and *****ing about how the other team is full of sandbaggers. Not everyone can be championship quality like yourself after all.

Take a drive up to brickyard, you'll find plenty of people willing to play though you'll want to bring some cash.

I guess I have never paid attention to any of his posts.

Are you suggesting be is full of chit ? :grin-square:

He's honestly the best troll on this site.

The audacity of those league players. Spending their time the way the want and taking pool as (not) seriously as they choose. It's almost as if they don't think your opinion matters at all!!

thats debatable.....if i were a betting man....oh wait...lol...my moneys on tramp.

he's as bad as i am at work, with his stories....i tell guys facts alot....and then lie to them from time to time and have them ask other people really stupid chit.

once i had a bunch of pads on the floor of the "MCC" which is an electrical master control room, breakers and what not.....

some lost wet behind the ears operator walks through the door lost, and i slowly look up at him.....

then say STOP! dude get outa here! THERES ELECTRONS EVERYWHERE!......dusts out the door lol

then the superintendent called me over the intercom and said

"keeb...if you scare another one of my new hires i'm callin ya daddy!"

ive given leagues a thought, theres a slick willies within 4 minutes from my home,

but the thought of team play makes me gargle

The sport of pool is in dismal shape in this country and the many contributing factors have been discussed at length. I suck at pool but from my perspective, this sport needs me and people like me desperately. My annual spend on pool industry related goods and services is above the average pool player/enthusiast. I suppose that my skill level improves slowly over time so that someday my game may not disgust the OP. The players in that league are the grass roots of the sport. From them, others will be introduced including, someday, their children. Break down all the golfers in the US and rate their skill level A through D with A being scratch. The percentage of D's way, way over 50%. The golf industry would die without all those "hackers". Therefore, they are treated respectfully at courses all over America and they are encouraged to take lessons, play more and improve. Better players don't turn their nose up at those trying to learn the game. In fact, most skilled folks are willing to lend a hand with some helpful tips when asked. The sport of golf knows where the bread is buttered and it is not with the small percentage of great players.

Want to know one major thing that is wrong with pool from an avid player and fan like me? It is the least accepting and inviting sport in America. It is filled with people like the OP. Certainly there are good ambassadors but plenty that discourage the growth of the sport. People like me and the poor players in that league buy cues, cases, balls, tables, cloth, private instruction, league dues, pay per view, etc., etc. You really want to discourage these people? I often feel like there is no place in this sport for a guy like me. I'm a little older and trying to develop a decent game. So where do I fit OP?

Precisely.
I was not trolling, ghost. I was serious as a heart attack, which I've had by-the-way.
Leagues, and league players are our future. The days of teenagers heading into the poolrooms and learning the craft are over.
There are about eight of us golden oldies currently playing in my neck of the woods. When we go, (and most of us already have one foot in the grave and the other one on a banana peel) who's gonna fill dem shoes. Well, it's going to be league players because they're all that's left.
Such is life. :)

They may be bad, but they arent afraid of actually going out to shoot like you are... IMO it doesnt get much worse then that.
