Are you happy?

With all the threads about handicaps, how long it takes to get to a certain level, can I work and play at a high level?....
It got me thinking about my own game and if I'm happy with it.

The answer for me is, yes!
I'm a borderline 6/7 in APA 8 and 9 ball. I play twice a week and feel that's plenty based on my life and how busy I am with kids, girlfriend, friends, family, etc...
I saw my game go up after the past couple of years but now it seems to be plateauing. I thought it would bother me but it doesn't.

What about you? Are you happy with your level of play or do you feel there is a lot of room to improve and you have the time and skill to make it happen?

Me, I just don't have the time and probably lack some natural skill to get much better.

Pretty happy. Of course, always looking to continue to improve...but if it doesn't happen, I can live with it.

I play pool maybe once every two weeks. Used to play 6 or 7 days a week. But then there's work, wife, kid, family, friends, etc..

Given how little I play, I suppose I'm happy with my level of play. It is frustrating though since I don't play nearly as well as I used to 6 or 7 years ago but... its to be expected.

- B <----------- woulda been a WHOLE lot happier if I won the MegaMillions a few weeks ago.

Happy or got things in perspective?

Like a bunch here, I'm a working class shmoe. Like others, I have things going on that doesn't let me play more.

So, the short answer is I'm never happy with my game, but I can accept where I'm at and live with it.

Here's a thought- if you don't play like SVB (or close to it), you aren't making a ton of money at this game. That ain't too fun either.

Insatiable..........

Insatiable is what I am. :D

I don't think I will ever be satisfied with my fundamentals. They always need work and improvement.

I like it so far.

Don't get me wrong. It's not that I enjoy knowing I probably won't get much better. It's just that I am a realist :D

Nice! I agree. Family, kids, work, vacations, boat at the lake, yard work ..... lots of important things that take the place of pool time (Okay maybe not the yard work!).

I think Eric had it right - perspective.....

I play as a 7/8 in APA. No table at home (no room); play once or twice weekly. Decent game. On some. off some. Bottom line - I would have to play a lot more than twice/week to get the consistency down and improve.

All things considered, I'm happy with how I'm playing right now but I'm still always trying to get better. If I were totally satisfied, I'd start doing something else.

Just because I realize that my abilities are finite, doesn't mean I don't keep pushing myself. I love the game, and my goals are to continue to attempt to consistently take games from those I couldn't have hoped to take games from in the past. I got back into the game far too late after doing the family thing for it to really be anything more than that. I fully realize I am a small fish in an even smaller fish bowl.

Just got "serious" again with pool about 6 months ago (at age 50).

I am clearly improving, but slower than I thought, so I would say "unhappy" with my progress right now.

Also coming to terms with the fact that I'm not nearly as gifted as I thought I was. So like most people, it will take many years to be where I want to be........:frown:

I suck at pool.

Am I happy? Yes, I am a very happy person, but how I shoot pool has nothing to do with it. I love the heck out of a good game of pool, but in the big picture there are many more things going on in my life that are way more important. I'm not going to fret if my game plateaus (I think it already has) or even starts to go south. My father is still living (age 89 1/2), I have 2 children and 7 grandchildren, I eat good food, drink fine drinks, have a good roof over my head, a comfortable mattress and a nice-working AC unit. What's not to be happy about?

Hell no, I'm not happy with it, but I accept it for what it is. I'll probably never be happy with it.

When your young, and can play 40 hours a week, you have the time and ambition to play well. Then at some point you realize there's more to life than a pool hall, like family and friends.

Oh yeah, and pools not gonna pay for my retirement, so yeah, that's gotta come first too.

I still enjoy playing when I can, and wish I could play more, but some things in life just have to wait.

I'm happy with my improvement since my little, "health incident", last year. I'm not happy with my game yet though. I will never be until Shane is begging me for a spot. Even then, I'll want more.

Happy, yes. Complacent, not ever.

I'm happy that I can execute well enough to string together a couple racks every now and then and can play strategy well enough to hand with some pretty decent one pocket players. In other words, I play well enough to enjoy the game, and understand enough to really appreciate what the pros and semi-pros are doing.

On the other hand, knowing that there's room for improvement drives me to try new things and improve my consistency, so I wouldn't be satisfied to continue playing without feeling like I am still improving.

Well said. I think this probably best describes me as well.

I'm as happy as a clam at high tide...and busier than a one-armed paper hanger!

For those of you who are not happy with your skills or improvement, take a lesson or two from a qualified instructor (one who uses video analysis).
There are many to choose from, and are spread out across the country. Then there are a couple like me, who travel coast to coast.

I play in a scratch league on a team with close friends. We enjoy each other's company, our playing ability is pretty close, and we have no drama. It also helps that we tend to win each session. So yes, I'm happy.

Happy? Not until I reach my goal of being a world champion by the time I'm 70. Only 5 years to go...

Happy? Reasonably pleased, given that I've only been playing a couple years, and took up the game at 46.

Satisfied? Absolutely not! I get rather frustrated, and I'm sure that I expect too much of myself.

The game motivates me, drives me, frustrated me, pleases me, entertains me, fascinated me.... Crazy game, this pool.
