Av. APA Skill Level?

For 8-ball. I've heard different views on this. Some say it's SL4, others SL5.

Anyone know?

I know in my league, around 2/3 of all players are SLs 2-4.

Also, does anyone know if there is a difference between the average SL of men and women players?

Just over 1/3rd in our league are SL4, by far the biggest percentage.

Out of 90 players:
SL7 - 6
SL6 - 14
SL5 - 14
SL4 - 32
SL3 - 22
SL2 - 2

So far as the ladies: (out of that same group above)
SL4 - 7
SL3 - 11
SL2 - 2

Kind of interesting, I guess.

My APA rating is around 5000 or so. All you have to do is show up and you beat me :lol:

Looking at the league I play in and comparing the numbers, there pretty close. Its a smaller league but percentage wise its really close to what your league has. I'd imagine you'll see similar numbers throughout since you're limited by the 23 rule.

Out of 55 players:
SL7 - 2 - 3.6%
SL6 - 6 - 16.4%
SL5 - 11 - 20%
SL4 - 21 - 38.2%
SL3 - 11 - 20%
SL2 - 1 - 1.8%

Average APA SL

You got me wondering, so I calculated my immediate 8 ball league area. This consists of 3 divisions of 28 teams having 194 players total.

SL2 = 14 players or 7.2%
SL3 = 60 players or 30.9%
SL4 = 49 players or 25.2%
SL5 = 42 players or 21.6%
SL6 = 23 players or 11.8%
SL7 = 6 players or 3%

I was surprised the SL3's had the largest majority.

always assume a girl 4 shoots like a 5, and a 5 shoots like a 6 and so on.

women are kept lower because they want to keep the league as a social gathering.

I don't know...i have played against and with plenty of women in APA, and I think the 'Any Given Sunday' rule applies...

'Anyone can beat anyone else in any given match'

By that I mean when you see a certain player have a great match (i.e. play above their skill level), whether they are a woman or not, you need to consider that the great match is likely not the norm -- and that there are probably many other less stellar performances which have been recorded which cause the player to have their current rating.

Just my experience though...

Plus the first vs last factor

Being a social league, many APA players indulge in alcoholic beverages.
If I play first I play better than when I play last, with the BEER factor coming into play.
What about the rest of you guys?:eek::eek::eek::eek:

I guess it all depends on what your preferred mixture is...:D

For us that have no experience with APA at all, how good is for example a SL5?

Can you describe the average joe being a SL5? how many run-outs, what kind of knowledge does this person have etc

maybe edit your post to include a poll so we can see the average AZB skill level. This won't be representative of the APA as a whole but it'd be interesting to see anyway. I'd expect a lot more 6's and 7's.

That isn't exactly accurate in our league. They are handicapped pretty much like the guys, for the most part. I just got back from getting beaten by a female SL4, and that's right about where she should be. We play pretty much even, give or take a little. (Didn't help that she dropped the 8 on her first break, heh.) The other ladies that played tonight (4 others) were also appropriate for their skill level, male or female. I've played with all of them for the better part of a year now, so I know their games pretty well.

Maybe some places it's like jdxprs says. Not all of them tho. At least not here.

if it is apa, then it is true.

if a woman and a man put up identical numbers over the course of 3 sessions, the woman will be 1 skill level lower.

I'm giving you 8-ball handicaps. We don't see a lot of run-outs in 8 ball here, certainly not by an SL5 very often. Occasionally. Usually by SL6's or SL7's. I'm an SL4, and I got close to one for the first time tonight. If that gives you any indication. 6 balls before the choke. Did the same last week. Getting there, I suppose... :o

I keep score for our team quite a bit, and I don't remember a break and run in the last few weeks. But we only play either (1) SL6 or SL7 each week, which of course leads back into the 23-rule argument. Most players in our league below SL6 won't be running out very often, so I don't see it on our score sheet save for rarely.

Does that help?

I have no perspective on 9-ball, where I would expect it to happen more frequently. We don't have a 9-ball league here locally, so I have no reference point.

OK, I'll get back to you after the summer session, when I've played three in a row.

Coming down from the grassy knoll, I'll tell you that most of the ladies I've referenced have been playing longer than me, so they are pretty much set into their handicaps. Without fluctuation. I know the lady I played tonight has been an SL4 for a while now, more than three sessions. Same with two of the other 4 that played tonight. The other two are in their second session like me.

Again, you might see that stuff in some places, just not everywhere. Broad brush syndrome... but then again, it's easy to cover any APA discussion in blanket statements. Despite what someone involved might tell you, huh?

As a new player in the APA, what level do you immediately start off as? Level 2 for Women, and Level 3 for Men?

A SL5 will, on rare occassion, run out a full rack. They are mainly 4-6 ball runners with limited knowledge of safeties or cue ball control.

A SL5 would probably be considered a low to average C player.

Koop - a high C, low B at best

girls kept lower

Sorry to burst your bubble but women are not kept lower. There ranking is the same as their male counterpart.
