Awesome Ivory

Hi,

Over the last three weeks I have been building 2 big cues that have over 300 Elephant Ivory inlays to cut and nest. I tried Boone Trading Co. for Ivory in Washington State and have been delighted with their product and customer service. IMHO you can't find nicer people to do biz with either.

The slabs I have received on my last 2 orders are awesome. I normally cut my parts at .125 thickness and usually have to glue them to a paint stick before mounting them to my milling table. The slabs I got from Boone were all about .015 to .018 oversize and they are very very flat on my milling table.

I have used 2 other vendors for ivory in the past and most of the stock I received was not consistent in thickness and some had big areas that were unusable to me because some side areas were wedge shaped when observed on an elevation view.

Because these new slabs have been super consistent dimensionally, I have been able to produce more parts yield because I have very accurate edges and I can program my margins in the nesting function much more efficiently.

Thank you Boone Trading Co. for helping my business with a great product. http://www.boonetrading.com/Pg24.html

JMO,

Rick G

Here is the 2nd order I just got in the mail today. It is as good as the first order and shows me a high degree of consistency.

Boone Trading's nice dimensionally uniform stock allows for better inlay yields

I'm not touching Ivory at all-I leave that to others.
Just a question-When would the US run out of "pre-ban" ivory ( the ban started in 89' right?)
If you think about it 2 times before you flame me you would get my point...
My comment is not related to the company mentioned-just a stubborn view on the topic...

There was TONS of ivory in the USA before the ban.

In the early 80s it was $20 per pound, and you could buy a
pickup truck full any day of the week. Everybody and his dog sold
ivory wholesale.

Boone Trading Co. is a name I have not heard in a while. I use to buy some Ivory from them about 15 to 20 years ago. Their supply dwendled and I found other sources for tusks.

Hi,

I would like to point out here that I have never bought Ivory from Chris and he was not one of the 2 vendors I was unhappy with because of usable dimensional quality of a slab.

I don't think Chris sells elephant Ivory, as I visited his website. I may be confused but I think he only sells camel & buffalo bone and mammoth and the like.

Just to keep things clear,

Rick

It's nice to finally hear of pleasent and VERY happy dealings with a supplier. Kudos to you Rick for sharing your great experience with a supplier. Usually we only hear of the bad experiences.
Very Refreshing.

A few months ago I called this supplier up and special ordered some 3/16” thick slabs for wide inlays. Very nice to work with, very fast delivery, & no cracks.

I know you are using pre-ban ivory, but it brings up the sad story reported today in Camaroon of the unabated slaughter of 200 elephants this year alone.
Just a thought to consider.

Of course they were'nt baited, no need to bait an animal that big, just follow their path of destruction:p

I still sell Ivory, but took it down off of the site for a while. The demand has just about become larger than the supply, so I have just continued to sell to those who have been buying from me and not really seeking too many new customers for Ivory.

I have been buying from Dave at Boone for yrs . I also buy from Nantucket Basket co . Both have great Ivory . Jim

Boone is a great source for many things hard to find.

As for pre-ban ivory. You do know that you can still get a hunting permit in Africa, kill an elephant, and bring home the tusks. Once the tusks are in the USA you are free to use them any way you see fit in the US, including to resell them to cue makers, who in some number of years could actually use them for such projects. The Ivory laws are somewhat like Obama's Banking Reform.
