Awesome nailbiter - Earl vs. Kuo Po Cheng

Came down to the wire, literally the last ball...

no runouts, hardly anyone has a ball down or a look at the one after the break... so lots of good kicks. Earl looked sick every time the kid jumped (which of course he's gonna do, he's from Taipei). The kid looked nervous, earl fired in a lot of tough shots and played delicate position, his kicking was pretty solid too.

Earl got into it with himself and the crowd early and said the crowd was against him. When scott interviewed him after he said something like ..."I do 4-5-600 situps every day, I keep fit and stay in shape, these guys treat me like some kind of clown".

Spoiler time - earl blamed his loss on bad rolls. He swiped the chalk as he stormed off.

Scott and billy's commentary is growing on me, and they have started sweat betting m&m's on whether someone is out, or who breaks and runs, or the outcome of the match. Each m&m being a ten dollar bill of course =) Someone suggested this may replace the term "jellybeans".

Earl's final shot to take it all was with the CB hanging near the corner and OB angled mildly for the far corner or a sharply (like 50-60 degrees) for the side. For some reason he plays it in the side?! I envisioned clearly earl getting down and drilling it in the corner like it was nothing. Probably woulda made the kid sick, as he horribly butchered some tough shots while frozen to the rail. (kid? actually 31 years old? hard to swallow)

The gamelosing shot, as I remember it. The angle can be deceptive.

Who else likes this in the corner?

A younger, more aggressive Earl would've fired it straight in. I like the corner, but I'm not a world champion.

It looked like the corner scared him. I would have chosen the side just because I find the side pockets much easier to get up and fire at without much thought. The corner was a ugly shot, at least in that situation. After spending a little time with Earl last weekend I really felt bad for him tonight. He had a few unfortunate things happen to him and his opponent played pretty sporty.

luxury pointed out in chat that probabably the thinking is... you miss high or low on the side, the OB banks to the end rail. The cue ball is heading for the opposite rail. So you can miss safe. Only when hitting the nipple do you really get a random and probably unlucky leave near the center of the table.

But earl shoots so straight if he misses it will be the nipple.

I guess the other reason would be that the sides are larger by a hair. All other things being equal, that makes the side better.

Despite all that I'm trying to cinch this. Meaning the pocket I can see better without using my peripheral vision as much, and a less sharp cut.

Great review of what happened Creedo. Cue table can be tough but Earl's cue ball was closer to the corner pocket than that. By about half the distance I believe. The commentating and chat was very entertaining for a great match. Don't miss out on these free streams people.

The 10 was closer to the center, and yes, the cue ball was a little closer to the corner, but the old Earl would have speared that ball straight in the corner pocket. I used to see him practice longer shots than this one and make them like they were hangers.

same ol' same ol'

Only the shooter knows the best shot for him at the moment. I was thinking corner all of the way but I was also thinking it was a damned tough shot. The cue ball was much tighter in the corner and every little bit makes a big difference when it is that close. Hitting down on the cue ball nothing short of perfect is good enough at that range. Earl chose the side so I'm sure it was the better shot for him at the moment. One thing for sure, Earl wasn't sweating a safety or two way shot, he was playing to win.

Earl and Cheng both played well with some tough run outs to work with. I really hate to hear that Earl cheapened the battle talking of bad rolls. While I enjoy the commentary the uneven volume when the commentators get excited causes me to have to turn the sound off late night so I didn't hear what Earl had to say after the match. I've never agreed with interviewing someone immediately after a tough loss anyway. Great color for the folks that like reading tabloids too but very hard for any competitor to not be a little upset and say things they will regret later. Given ten minutes what he said might have been quite a bit different.

Maybe. But if you simply think of it in terms of the tolerance on cue alignment that will still make the ball go in, you probably have more margin for error on the long pot than the thin cut. Your tolerance becomes vanishingly small the closer you get to 90° cut angle, depending on relative distances and angles of course. I'm not greatly familiar with pool table pockets, but it's certainly true of snooker tables. I'd take the long pot every time.

Disconnect the cable TV

and get good internet connection. LMAO at Billy & Scott then throw Earle's antics in the mix and it is pool streaming at its best! Thanks TAR for a good quality stream.

You want to talk crazy match....hill hill.

Kuo Po Cheng definitely had some nerves, but made a couple sweet shots the final rack. After he kicked in the ball I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) he made another nice cut in the side with three rail shape on the 7....got goofy on the the 9 since the 8 was frozen on the rail in a tough spot...makes the nine and tried to play three rail shape again. Earl started frothing at the mouth once he saw it was a goofy pressure bank that of course he missed by about half a foot.

I think he should have gone in the corner as well, but easy to say sitting behind a laptop watching and commentating lol.

Good match and good commentary as well.

Either shot was tough. The long shot was no gimme by any means. Because as it was stated earlier the cb was closer to the corner pocket. Making the side shot in my opinion the better of the 2 shots. As you could see that angle a little better.

By the way, anybody know what time the stream is supposed to start today ?

It's hard for me to fathom a situation where I would keep the volume down when Earl is being interviewed after a thrilling match. Chalk another point for staying a bachelor I suppose. I 100% agree with interviewing right after a match and it was very well played by Scott imo. This match was a step in the right direction for pool on the internet. Should they wait until everyone logs off the stream to do the interview?

All you guys that are always thinking about the player's best interest just remember that putting the fans first and entertaining them is in the player's best interest. Well that is if they just happen to be a pool player that cares about money.

was more like baiting

I did turn the sound up a little later. Sounds like the commentator went down there looking for a rant from Earl. Yes, I think that is bullshit. Ever have a mike stuck in your face after a tough loss or having thousands of dollars worth of equipment destroyed knowing that it means it will be months before you compete again? Common sense dictates that you give someone a few minutes to regroup. Unfortunately common sense isn't common anymore.

Smart competitors don't say crap for a few minutes until they are under control. A friend and fellow competitor swore he was going to kill me right after an incident. Three days later I was over at his shop helping him get ready for the next week. No apologies on either side, none needed.

I kinda agree with this, as I don't recall many other sports where the loser is interviewed immediately, they get some time to regroup then come out to the microphones.

But you know what? Because it is Earl, I could care less. Getting out of his chair during the game, packing up his bag early, talking when his opponent is shooting, fvck him. I am glad he lost. I am sick of his act, his BS, and think he deserves every bit of negative press he gets, including having a mic stuck in his face right after losing.

And I don't want to hear crap about me being an Earl hater. When I watch my accustats DVDs of the old Earl, he was always fun to watch and the sharking antics were minimal. Even if I had never heard of Earl prior to yesterday's match, his behavior detailed above is freaking ridiculous.

I was surprised Earl didn't shoot it in the corner but then I'm just a banger.

Earl's just mad at the world because there are more players in the world that can run out, now. When Earl was playing like Jesus, there were less players anywhere near his level. Thus, he could torture people and be ready for the people near his speed. It's a new world.
