AZ Billiard crowd funded tournament???

Before you say not a chance lets brain storm it out a little.
A tournament sponsored by AZ billiards the largest and possibility the most influential billiard entity in the world.

Seed money coming directly from pool fans. Say not $5 10 or 20 but a fixed amount say $50.00. to $75.00 or more if one wants. For this you get a free streaming feed and maybe a shirt or something.

It would be hosted by a selected pool room to cut down on costs and run by say CJ or Jay or whoever is selected that can be trusted. Rules can be maybe something new like we are always talking about.

Like I say I am just brain storming so details would have to be determined but would you be willing to be a part of it if you trusted the project and the people running it? It is done all the time in other areas.

My wife gives a lot of money to a children's theater and animal causes. Just yesterday she was out giving food for their pets to people who have a hard time feeding them. Better that then they be thrown out in the street.

One guy on here mentioned some time back he has put $500,000 in his will for animal causes. Why not give a little to the one thing we all love the game of pool.

Yes, I know, who cares about a bunch of broke pool players and why should I just give them money. Because they entertain us and we love the sport. Just something I have been thinking about for a while. You know, with a little luck this could be like a $50, to $100,000 annual tournament.

You got me. It's actually a great idea. As a businessman, the thing I've always been impressed with about pool is how little added money is necessary to put on a tournament and how successful many of the regional tournaments are in attracting players including out of area pros.

But if we're paying for it, let's really get involved. I would like to see active forum members invited and involved (they have to pay too) but get a spot, a game or two on the wire from the pros.

AZ - Mike - has all the contacts for advertising and sponsorship too. Have the damn thing in Arizona somewhere before or after the big Las Vegas events and you might have a winner. Lots of support in the West too. Jay Helfert would be ideal to assist.

I sure like the idea. Maybe an invitational type format, so if you donate $50 you get three names, $100 get six, etc

What pat does with accustats is very concise with six players in a round robin format. With enough money raised to make it a competitive event

The AzB invitational. Has a catchy ring to it...

This is a great idea. I think that you could have a few AZB based tournaments a year, if you can find a few places to host the events. Someone should run this by Big Truck to see if he has any idea's on who might want to start it.

Man this is another Great idea I'd support. *(OP must be retired too.) There's power in numbers, and this sport needs community support... just get the game STRUCTURE right. STOP offering 'piss in' pool and you get 10X's the interest and respect. :thumbup:

Mac, I think that you are a lucky guy. Your wife is doing a great thing. I would like to know who said they were leaving 500K to a Shelter. Beyond coolness.

Unless I get destitute, I will probably leave my Taxi Plate to our Humane Society.

That will give them a guaranteed $2000.00 a month donation, forever. That will pay for a lot of food.

My wife thinks that my step kids are getting it. Bwahahahahahaha, is all I can say.

Eyes. Any given posting on here can reach thousands to tens of thousands very quickly. Just look at the numbers all the way to the right. I would call that an pretty influential.

Someone made a posting yesterday about Jenn Barretta. Over 7000 people have read it in less the 24 hours.

Things said on here have influence as well as what is written on the home pages. A monthly mag with a small circulation has little power compared to the almost instant reach of a website like this.

I rarely speak to a pool player who doesn't visit AZ from time to time. It is a very important place in the pool world. Your here aren't you? I know in 7 years you have only made like 700 postings and may not care much about the site.

To many though, this website is their connection the the pool world for news and what is going on. The instant and current nature of it far exceeds any monthly publication. Don't underestimate it's importance.

Great idea!

Depending on how many people take place, could even do a series of regional qualifiers, then an AZ National Tournament for the top 16 or 32, with each match streamed...

Would be awesome to do something like this to replace some of the tournaments that have disappeared in recent years.

Had a very similar idea I was thinking of doing a year ago or so but then other things became more important. I would be interested in being involved in this.
I don't think you even need to start off real big it can be a small event. You could piggy back off another event think like the bigfoot event at DCC. Maybe something like that could be done with funds collected and go from there. Atleast get started with something small and manageable with the thought of growing it into something bigger.
 
Man my heart about leapt out of my chest. Im so sick and tired of reading why pool is dying...this is a great way to do something about it. Find a location, a promoter/organizer (ahem mr helfert), and i will definitely throw some money at it.

The piggyback idea is a great start.
I like the idea of getting a few players from the forums involved playing too.
 
I just want to play Devil's advocate. So a couple hundred AZers each donate $50-$75 to fund a pro tournament. This is just charity? It's a donation?

This is the basic problem with pro pool - where's the incentive, where's the return on investment, to have tournaments? Players expect to get their entries back plus a bunch of donated money that comes out of thin air.

If you can figure out a model where people invest and then make money, you're on to something.
 
This thing could be a monster. I would even pay the 50 or 75 (or 100?), and I'm really cheap.
Thinking of any larger money behind it? Any corporate type sponsorship or all AZB Funded?

Profit sharing could easily be a part of this. I agree, blindly throwing money at a tournament without incentive would result in a one time event that would fall short of expectations. If only the pool world knew about the benefits of BTC this would be so much easier.
