Off to Cebu today. Dennis will hook me up with his friend there who knows the local pool scene. Last time I was there (maybe 3 years now) I discovered a little pool room just across the alley from my small hotel (that happens a lot over here, there are so many hole-in-the-wall poolrooms). I practiced a while and asked about getting a game. I was told to wait until later when an American guy comes in with his own cue. The tables were basically junk and I had to use a house cue (also junk) but fortunately I had my little "tools" with me to clean the shaft and fix the tip.
Sure enough that night an older, heavy-set white guy comes in toting his own cue. I had gone to dinner and come back to practice some more. I was told this guy likes to play One Pocket. So after he hit a rack or two I asked him if he wanted to play. He took a look at me with my house cue and said sure, but he only wanted to play One Pocket. I asked him if that was the game where each player gets one corner pocket. And he said yes that's it (he had a little smile on his face). We agreed to play for 100p a game (yes it's a very small bet, but hey it's action).
He knew the moves fairly well and could make all the easy shots, but that's about it. He didn't bank that good and his cue ball control was medicore. I played my 'C' speed and still won four games before he gave up, telling me that he was a little off that night. The table time was all of 10p per game, so I netted 360p . He said we could play some more the next night but I never saw him again.
I'm sure there are good players somewhere in Cebu. I just haven't found them yet. And I might not like it when I do! My experience has been when they call someone in to play you, you're in trouble. There are some serious pool hustlers making a living in the Philippines. It would take an 'A' speed American player to beat a lot of them. I've already run into 8 or 10 guys who I've never heard of that play top speed pool. It's their job! I know you probably never heard of Bong before, but believe me a player like Mike Dechaine or Stevie Moore might be in trouble gambling with him. And this guy Koykoy is rated higher than Bong! Three or four other young guns have beaten Efren this year! The way you make a name for yourself over here is to challenge a top player. They all want Efren! Francisco gets challengers all the time, but he still rules the roost. He flew to Davao last year to take on Koykoy after he (Koykoy) beat Efren and Lee Van at Rotation. Francisco traveled a couple of hours out of Davao to play Koykoy on his homecourt. They were betting high (like 600,000P!) and Francsico got the cheese!
This is how Francisco spends his free time, WORKING! Dennis also is ready, willing and able to take on ALL challengers but very few even want any part of him. At least not without some weight! Every time I see him play he's giving up weight, even to good players. Shane has played a bunch of these young sharpshooters plus all the top guns as well. He is a legendary player over here, one of the few to ever come over here and beat some of the best players for the cash. But even Shane is careful about who he plays. He avoids Dennis, Francisco and Alex from what I've seen. He pounded Ronnie A., Roberto Gomez and Jeff DeLuna his last trip here. They talk about Shane with some reverence and ask me when he's coming back. I don't hear the same kind of respect for any other foreign player, although the young Brits (Jayson, Melling, Karl and DARREN of course) and guys like Niels, Mika and Ralf are also highly respected players. But only Shane will step up against almost anyone and bet his own and bet HIGH! That's how you get respect in the Philippines, and other places as well.
