Ball in hand?

Do you guys prefer to ignore this rule when playing? I played both ways for years and without ball in hand (and some other less significant rules) I find the matches much more interesting...

The "other" way, behind-the-line, can many times penalize the incoming shooter that should be REWARDED for an opponents foul.

Without bih too many funny things will happen. For fun it's ok but for $ or tournaments you need solid structured rules.

It really does not mater what I think about it. The rule is BIH in any tournament scenario. In a bar, no money on the line, it also does not mater what I think, or even if I can think.

What if your playing someone and they just roll the cueball behind one of their balls everytime they want too?

If this is in regard to money-ball based games like 8,9, and 10 Ball, then what is the penalty for a foul, if not BIH?

Sorry, I'm not buying it...me thinks Poolkillers has resurfaced.

Ditto. I play where no pieces can move more than one spot unless they jump over an opponent in chess too.

Playing 8 ball without BIH is ridiculous,do you realize your opponent can directly hit any of your group and tie them all up together? Its completely absurd in any kind of competitive situation.

A few years back a friend of mine moved to a new area.We tried to find places to play pool without having to drive far.We found a large bar type establishment with 3-8' Valleys and a 9' table. There were some decent bar box 8-ball players there. They would get upset though when me and my friend would each hold a table for hours.Playing BIH we never played any safes witch gave the regulars a chance to win sometimes. The best player there was the bouncer and he hated BIH,it got to the point where he barred us from playing BIH.I told them without ball-in-hand they might never win a game and that's what happened.

We had tons of fun inventing new ways to foul to win a game. The players were just trying to make a ball but they had no chance since we could manipulate their set to make it impossible for them to win.

Don't worry we have a different kind of penalty in case of a direct shot at the opponent's balls, but it doesn't include grabbing any ball with your hand... Of course, they CAN hit your balls indirectly but it adds a lot more fun to the game and makes it more challenging, but it never created any absurd situation so far.

Many players attempted to do that when they played me. But after I countered with well-placed shots several times, they usually started to rethink their strategy ;)

We don't play behind the line either. That would be even more ridiculous. In case of direct shots at opponent's balls everything is left where it is, but the player who did it loses his/her turn. If someone pockets the cueball, we return it to the head spot and, again, the opponent gets the turn. We also penalize excessive direct pocketing of the cueball.

No those are the rules to "ignore" one is IMHO a little silly. When I am playing kitchen games great but when playing a BIH game it is best played with BIH.

Define "more interesting" please.

Who is "we" and what's the penalty?

Sounds like you're talking as if "bar rules" are not absurd; I will tell you right off THEY ARE ABSURD!!!

You were probably not playing a good pool player; Yea, you are really suggesting that "public" or "bar" rules are not absurd.

I think you're underthinking what we're thinking ;)!!!

Beyond the fact that behind-the-line can be abused by a smart player, I like ball in hand because it forces you to sharpen up and shoot correctly.

If you know your opponent won't get out from behind the line (because he can't use his ball in hand to solve a problem area) then you don't care as much about fouling. But if you lose for sure after fouling, you're gonna be a little more smart about it.

Push out forever?

If there is no penalty for "pushing out" on every shot, a game can go on forever, both players just returning push for push.

There IS an option for those who don't like one foul BIH, the kitchen or "no rule" bar rules. It's the way we played in the NPBA, which was the first national league organization (1959-1986?). We played two foul BIH and three-foul loss. Now THIS was challenging and fun for the strategist, but of course it could make a match longer.

After reading this post, it's the same joker. I think Mr. Wilson has to ban his city from creating new accounts.
