Banded Ivory??

Hey Guys, Please,
I need help again. Bought this Ivory and I got this brown bands on the cross section and causes light brown streaks on the outside diameter if my caps.. Could anyone please explain what they are and if the brown affects the "Quality of the Ivory" (Making it a low grade). Is there a grading system for Ivory, like woods? What doe we look for in Ivory?? Thanks...

Those are growth rings, much like those in a tree. I think it's the diet of the elephant that dictates how dark the rings are. For your purposes, you can bleech the Ivory, to a consistant white color. PM me & I'll tell you how...JER

FYI, as a collector, I like to see some grain in the ivory. It gives it character and I much prefer that to the pure white stuff that looks like bone.

Chris, I totally agree in fact I would prefer Ivory with these characteristics to use in my cues. The only place I would use pure white Ivory is for ferrules.

I don't use any bleach on ivory. I've been told it weakens the ivory and personally I like some graining to ivory. My ferrules have streaks like that but not as pronounced. I wouldn't change it at all...

I agree with all of you, but I said for his application (joint caps), he could bleech the Ivory, if he wanted, with no structual problems. I love the look of "grain" in Ivory...JER
