This post......reminded me of a movie where Donald Sutherland was a tank commander in a WWII comedy with Don Rickles and others he said.I know nothing about anything, obviously, but it occurs to me that if the place was being run pretty well before (so not that much to fix), but was still struggling, that doesn't look great for pool halls as a viable businesses.
But I guess we know where the sport is overall...

The consultants gave them some cleaners and hand washers and things like that. They seemed bogus to me: UV lights that “kill all viruses in the whole room.” Really?*Not political!*
Since the backstory presented in this thread was Griffs was in trouble due to reduced business caused by Corona, did the show have any suggestions to improve business explicitly during Corona times? Or were they structuring the suggested improvements on the assumption that things will be back to 2019 normal soon?
Exactly. I'm actually surprised Mark would hire someone so incompetent. It's all about the numbers in a bar business. If he can't answer the basics, he has no business running the place. And if they can't make good food, what's the point of being open. Folks will come play pool and won't buy the food if it sucks. Big loss and Gary never thought about that. Food, drinks, etc is needed to stay in business. Pool time only cause you to close the doors right quick. And in the end, you could see that Gary even knew he was over his head. Mark owes him nothing, I've fired folks for a lot less.Six weeks after the show he was fired.
If I owned the place, I would have probably fired him, too.
Seems like he was better suited to run a pool tournament than a bar and grill. Inefficient with his time if he spent 7 days a week working and could not answer basic questions.
Howdy All;
Could be that Gary wasn't able to maintain with the 'New" structure that was
put in place by the make-over??
Show made a point of showing Gary as main disconnect between orders taken
and orders delivered to wrong customer/table/whatever. Gary tried to be the 'Do-
it-all" person that never makes a solid connection. Like a skid on the table due to
dirt/chalk build-up on either CB or OB. Shame it happens but it does. Only thing
Gary was guilty of IMO was trying to hard without the knowledge/skills to do so with.
Just my opinion.

I do not get why "hat guy" had an issue with that...he was mostly agreeing with what was said there. A lot of people do that. TV Drama? Who knows. It looked like they were really trying to build up the tension with Gary in the show. I loved the scene where Gary was saying “right, right” while the bartender consultant was criticizing him, and he said “stop saying right!” But as the show went on they dropped that whole story line.
Long time bad employee. Working 7 days a week and showing up 7 days a week is not the same thing. The dude did not even know where the tables were, he didn't know the table numbering system of the restaurant, that he managed and was at 7 days per week. How is that possible?Gary was long time employee, Taffer need a target, Gary was that.
Apparently he was at Griff’s 7 days a week, as over all manager. Bar, Food, Pool Room with 30 tables, ran tournaments.
Many hat for one person to wear.![]()

The drinks and food sucked, so what did he really manage? The room was losing money, so what did he manage? He had no plans to stop the bleeding so what did he manage? The bartenders had no direction, so who exactly did he manage? He didn't even know the food and drink costs, so what did he manage. He was not a manager, he was a guy who learned how to open and lock the front door at closing time.
Now you are implying Mark has no business sense. He's run and owned other pool rooms, he's run leagues, he's run large business operations. Holy cow.Well I wonder how much the Gary guy got paid, and apprently prior to Covid the place was making money. People who are the kind of manager Mark apprently do not work for peanuts, also those people are not a dime a dozen.
Many business fail because owner, want to own a Bar, Pool Room, Cigar Store, Resturant, and have no business sense.

And yes, incompetent bar managers are a dime a dozen, that's the problem. I seriously doubt Griff's was making money pre-Covid with bad food and drinks. He was hopefully breaking even or not taking too much of a loss, but he has too much invested not to try and turn it around. COVID never helps, but COVID is over, and it appears only pool players are coming back. But, you can't make it just selling table time. Without food and liquor, you're dead in the water.
Gary had no clue how to run a bar and toward the end he knew he was in too deep. Running a pool room, and running a full scale bar and restaurant, are not the same.
I was saddened to see Gary be the scapegoat on the TV show "Bar Rescue" for Griff's lack of success during the pandemic, but I do not know what goes on behind the scenes.
Mark G. is an intelligent businessman and has a demonstrated track record for successful business ventures. I do think Mark has a strong passion for anything pool-related. He has been known to reach out to people and offer his support for pool ventures in the past, even monetarily, which is pretty cool on his part. He is generous in this regard.
I wish both of them much success in their future. I think Gary will have no trouble finding a place that will appreciate what he has to offer. I cannot imagine the roller-coaster of emotions he's going through right now because of this TV show using him as the reason for Griff's not being more successful than it already is.
Griff's will move forward, hopefully, and continue to thrive as a Las Vegas entertainment facility. It's actually more than a pool room, in my opinion, and maybe a non-pool-type person experienced in running a joint like this would be good. Change is sometimes beneficial. In the past, Mark G. has wanted to delegate to others in his businesses, at least what I've observed—(Ozzie and BCA pool league and tournaments)—and maybe he will find that special person for Griff's so he can enjoy the autumn of his life and Griff's success.
You have to request Tafifer to appear on Bar Resque. Interesting.Just started, looks like nice place, only 20 minutes in r=to show. Apprently Taffer's experts say mixed drink suck.
