BD and IPT

I got my Billiards Digest today. The IPT has at least 3 full page ads in it. I wonder if they were paid for yet. I know the magazine has to make money, but this seems very wrong to me. If BD runs one more ad for the IPT, before the players are paid, I will never renew my subscription. If you agree that this is wrong, add your two cents.

I can't agree with you more, and I tip my hat to you.

Billiards Digest, knowing what they know about the IPT, should take a stand in favor of the unpaid players and the sport, not the IPT or their own bottom line in this situation.

Maybe this can be the beginning of some unity in the billiards industry, whereas the "every man for himself" attitude will start to change in favor of a "win-win" attitude. There really are a lot of good, ethical people involved in the billiards community and something like this can be used as a catalyst for positive change.

At least we can hope.

Well, you have to consider that the issue you just received probably was printed before it became totally clear what was going on. We were all being strung along by the IPT, and the magazine probably did not have sufficient reason to believe things would get to where they are now. Maybe the ads were paid for well in advance? Who knows.

I agree that it would probably be best that they don't run ads in the future if the players haven't been paid. But you have to understand from their side, that this issue was probably printed a long time ago, and they didn't want to shun an advertiser, especially one that was supposed to be as big as the IPT was supposed to be, without having significant cause to do so.

If they have paid up front and have accepted their ad copy then they have to run the ads.

Nick

It should not be the magazine's business to take sides. For those of you who advocate not running ads until players are paid, do you think it is right to cut off the IPT's revenue streams? If the IPT has an ad for DVDs and it delivers those DVDs then it deserves that money. If it has ads for online memberships then it deserves that money. The money to pay the players has to come from somewhere and I would just as soon see it happen from income generated from legitimate IPT activities.

Many of us have resigned our memberships in protest and I think that is perfectly okay, we are outraged. However, if a new person subscribes and gets what they paid for then that's perfectly allright. I have already given the IPT $30. I cut them off from my $6 a month as a personal decision, but I am not going to go out an evangelize against signing up to become a member of the IPT's website. Nor am I going to advertise for it either. That is for each person to work out on their own.

At this point the IPT is not charged with any crimes by any law enforcement authority (yet), it has not declared bankruptcy or insolvency. Perhaps the "announcements" are lies. Billiard Digest should print an objective report on the situation filled with as much accurate information as it can and label speculation as just that. If the IPT has advertisements that have been paid for then Billiards Digest should not engage in any form of restraint of trade.

Billiards Digest is not an activist publication, it is an informative one. I am sure that Mr. Panazzo will give us his "opinion" in his editorial at some point.

It would be misguided to cancel your subscription over the IPT. Don't give any money to the IPT in protest but support the good guys in the business of which Billiard Digest has always been one. Not only would BD be opening themselves up to litigation if they pulled the ads, they also give Trudeau another entity to blame for his inability to pay. This way the IPT cannot claim to have been in a hostile enviroment that prevented them from doing business.

If anything perhaps if there are ads for the qualifiers then they should be ammended with the updated status of the postponements and perhaps an editor's note about the unpaid status IF the IPT ads make any guarantee claims.

That may be and it is why I said,

I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, this one time only.

I am totally okay with BD running the ads for the IPT because they were the ONLY ones who came forward and did an investigative type article on them...... at least they stepped forward and put some effort into finding out what was going on......

Thanks again to Edyie, though, for doing the BEST job of looking into the issue!

I agree with Tammie here. They, Bd did step up first.

Maybe they have a contract with IPT. If so, they must fulfill their end.

BD was late to the party IMO. The threads on the IPT board of this forum got them to dress for the dance. If it was not for this forum I think that BD would still be in their "wait and see" mode for fear of upsetting anyone...ie., KT.

well said, Roadie.
Remember also, this is a monthly mag, and deadlines are at least a week or two in advance.

Actually, I should revise this. It really still isn't clear what is going on. It is becoming more complex every day. But my point was that at the time of the magazine's printing, we were far less informed than we are now.

Kind of ironic that as I read this topic at the top of my screen there is an ad telling me about 2007 IPT qualifying tournaments this weekend.

Y'all plan on boycotting AZ Billiards as well?

I think most of the IPT players & their view of the WHOLE situation were late to the party.

AZ MIke says that the IPT still buys banner ads from him. In fact, I see one at the top of this page now.

I have to support Billiards Digest on this occasion.

Passing final judgment on the solvency of the IPT would be inappropriate. By every reasonable standard, those at Billiards Digest are practicing responsible journalism in trying to get to the bottom of the IPT mess, but they must, at present, recognize that the IPT remains a high-profile pool organization wanting to advertise.

Should those at Billiards Digest deem doing business with the IPT too risky, they may opt to discontinue selling ad space to the IPT, but that decision belongs to Billiards Digest.

I am not of the opinion that, by selling ad space to the IPT, Billiards Digest is showing disrespect or insensitivty to the pro players.

The banners that are running at the top of the site are part of an arrangement I made with the IPT at the beginning of the year.

Mike

IF AZB, BD or any other organization aware of the current non payments, were to take FURTHER NON CONTRACTED dollars for IPT ads, that would be a slap in the face to those pool players IMHO.

What the IPT has done is not borderline, it is flat out wrong and until they make it right their money wouldnt be good enough for me.

PS -I do understand paid-for ads to continue but i think about now I would put them on notice that they would soon be getting a refund.

If the players are not satisfied by the end of next week I suggest we explore the feasibilty of "running a banner" advertising IPT's debt.

So what type of business practices would an organization have to do to make you pull their banner? Generally you see companies pull out from using a certain spokesman (OJ, Rafael Palmeiro, etc) but I think that it can also work for the medium that is hosting the ad.
