Before the Hustler there was... "Goodbye Johnny"

Goodbye johnny was originally aired in 1959 and was an episode of the Alcoa theatre. (a weekly show of the time.)

In my opinion the best pool related tv episode ever.

I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Shooter and cue share the same fate.

How the hell had I not heard of this video before? That was surprisingly good. The video really has the feel of watching The Hustler. Can't find any info on this video on the internet.

Curly, thanks for the acknowledgement. Converting and editing out the commercials was not a big deal. And of course I kept a copy for myself!:D

How old was that VHS tape? It looked like it was at least 20 years old.
Did you record that from an over the air broadcast or from cable? In any case I was surprised at the quality of the video, everything considered.

I, also had not seen that video before, and thought it was very well done. You mentioned to me that you thought it was the inspiration for "The Hustler". Would you care to elaborate on that?

Thanks for sharing this great video with us and if you have any more gems that you would like for me to convert just let me know.

I'd forgotten all about that but remembered it as it developed. Certainly remember the Alcoa Theatre!! Thanks for the memories. :)

Very entertaining. Ranks right up there with the Twilight Zone episode in my book. Thanks for posting.

I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the fuel for the hustler. I see a lot of similarities.

Now if we could just get our hands on "The Player", Minnisota Fats 1970's movie, that would be cool!

Rep points given...thanks for showing this. Damn, compare the quality of this show to the junk" shown on TV today...

I taped it back around '79 or '80.

Both the book of the hustler and goodbye johnny came out in the same year, 1959. I had heard that this was inspired by the book and was the original treatment, but that it had also with it's successful airing helped convince hollywood to make the book into a movie.

Glad you all enjoyed this so much and i was happy to share it with you. (i kept it to myself for long enough.)

Confused

When I clicked on the URL for Goodbye Johnny, I got a 5 minute video. This is only a portion of what is being discussed in this thread. What is going on?
